Northwest Montana Educational Cooperative

Cherie Stobie, Director

I am so honored, humbled, and excited to have the opportunity to lead this amazing organization! Here is a little bit of background to help you get to know me.

My husband John (Three Rivers Bank) and I have three children: Amanda, who will soon be graduating from UMW in Elem. Ed (Go BULLDOGS!).; Katherine, who is studying history & philosophy at MSU (Go CATS!); and Dominic, who is a senior at Flathead High School (Go BRAVES!).

I attended school in Helena through 7th grade and then in Oregon, Illinois through high school. I then moved back to Montana to escape the never-ending cornfields and return to my beloved mountains and extended family.

I attended Carroll College, majoring in Elementary Education (Go SAINTS!) I taught a variety of grade combinations and subject areas my 16 years of teaching (three in the Helena area & 13 in Polson-Go PIRATES!) One highlight of my teaching career was being selected to travel to the Society for Neuroscience National Meeting . There, I visited the Salk Institute, witnessing brain research first-hand.

After completing my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership at the U of M (Go GRIZ!), I served three years as the K-5 principal at St. Ignatius Elementary (Go BULLDOGS!). We then relocated to the Flathead Valley, where I worked as the K-8 principal at Marion School for five years (Go PANTHERS!). Throughout my years as a teacher and principal, I have stayed actively involved in curriculum work at the local and state levels.

I am very excited about utilizing my teaching, curriculum, and leadership skills and background to lead the initiatives of the Northwest Montana Curriculum Cooperative, providing quality professional development and curriculum guidance for educators in the region!

STEAMing into the School Year (Conference) Update

We had a great time STEAMing into the school year at our August 13th & 14th conference at Glacier High School. We had about 100 participants each of the two days. Other than some tech issues the first day, it was very successful. Participants came away with things that they could implement right away as they kick off this school year. We are looking forward to using the feedback provided to us and the notes we have been taking to grow this event into a bigger and better one next year! One of the preliminary ideas is to have more students involved with presenting the sessions. Another is to provide a lot more sessions specific to math, making it a hybrid of STEAM & Math in the Mountains. Stay tuned!

IEFA Committee Meeting

Monday, Sep. 17th, 8am-4pm

58138 U.S. 93

Pablo, MT

The Confederated Salish & Kootenai tribes has invited our co-op to send 10 participants to this year's Tribal Ed PIR Day on Monday, Sept. 17th. The reason it is being limited is simply because the event has grown so much over the years that they are needing to reign in the number of participants from non-reservation schools. In the past, we have been very close to that number anyway, in part because it falls during a regular instructional day for our co-op schools. We should feel very fortunate to be allowed to participate in this event, as it is an amazing day of professional IEFA learning for teachers. I was fortunate to attend this event for 16 years while living and working on the Flathead Reservation.

Please note that they have changed both the location and the format this year. It will be held at SKC in Pablo this year. Participants will choose only one (1) strand for the day and there will not be field trips, as they have had in the past. This will allow teachers to go in depth in an area for a full day, rather than just getting a taste of several things. I am attaching the PIR day agenda.

Call the co-op (752-3302) to get your name or a teacher from your school's name on the registration list. We will need to know which of the strands they would like to sign up for at the time you call. We will register one teacher from each co-op school with the Tribal Ed Dept. until we have 10. If there are fewer than 10, additional teachers from the same school(s) will be added in the order they were received.

Reader & Writer's Workshop (3rd-5th Grade)

1203 U.S. 2, Kalispell, MT (United Way Conference Room)

You’ll learn practical tips and tools to help students discover (or re-discover) how to live joyfully literate lives while still holding fast to rigorous standards.

You’ll also learn how to become an expert professional who – like a doctor – listens, looks, assesses, and connects, then takes responsive action to help all students reach their potential.

**If your school is not a member of the Co-op, participants will be charged a $50/day registration fee.**
