Sherwood Spirit
January 2020
From Mr. Walerstein's Desk
Happy New Year! It is hard to believe that it is 2020. I hope that everyone had a restful holiday break with family and friends. January is a time for new beginnings, but we are also coming to the halfway point of the school year, and students will have to show perseverance and continue to work hard. As we begin the second half of the school year, we have many activities planned for the students.
We ended 2019 with our amazing Sherwood musicians performing in the Winter Concert at the Islip Middle School. Our Level I band and orchestra all performed in their very first concert and showed that all of their hard work had paid off. Additionally, our Level II band, Level II orchestra and chorus also showed off their musical talent. The students also had the opportunity to perform at Islip MacArthur Airport; this performance was well-received, and the students sounded great.
This month, we have several different assembly programs planned for the students; Danielle Wynn, a representative from the Islip Town Department of Environmental Control will come to discuss the importance of recycling on Wednesday January 8. On Thursday January 16, Sherwood Elementary School, in cooperation with Commack Road Elementary School, will welcome the Suffolk County Police Department Community Relations Bureau who will do a presentation entitled "Being Police Smart" for 4th and 5th grade students and their parents/guardians. This presentation will be about appropriate use of social media and technology. You can register using the flyer attached below. Finally, on January 30, Mike Harrold will visit to share his presentation, "A Multicultural Journey" all about Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands; he was here last year for an assembly program, and he was well-received by teachers and students.
This month our 5th graders will also be attending their Commerce Plaza field trip. This unique experience teaches the students all about a functioning community and includes experiential learning in which the students will learn various jobs and actually perform those jobs for the day. We are looking forward to this experience for the students.
This January, we will celebrate our PTA Reflections winners. The awards ceremony will take place on January 29 at 6:00 pm in the Sherwood library. Congratulations to all our participants; you can see the names of all of our winners below.
Once again, welcome back. Have a great January.
Warmest Regards,
