It's A Great Day to Be a Falcon!
Principal's Corner
Since Feb. 1st, Faribault High School has been recognizing Black History Month in a number of ways. We had a display of famous black Americans set in the main lobby and books by black authors in our library. We held an essay/art contest highlighting black excellence through history (see below for details). During daily announcements we offered a brief black history lesson to all students in attendance. There were also lessons centering around black history in our classrooms; lessons on the Scottsboro Boys, The Freedom Riders, John Lewis, and Ella Fitzgerald to name just a few.
You can tell a lot about a country or a school by what they deem important enough to remember and celebrate. At FHS, we want to ensure that every student's culture, heritage, and identity is validated, affirmed, and honored. We believe that all students benefit from curriculums that are diverse and include multiple perspectives. That is why we have chosen to take an active approach to Black History Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Native American Heritage Month, and Women's History Month. Our teachers consistently look for opportunities to have the lived experiences of ALL of our students reflected in what we teach.
The diversity we have in Faribault is one of our greatest strengths. We have so much to learn from each other if we decide to listen and honor the stories our neighbors have to tell from their past.
Best wishes for a great week. Always forward. We are Faribault!

Incident Command Team Discussing 4 Day Per Week In-Person Option For Secondary Students; Hopes to Vote Soon
The ISD 656 COVID-19 Incident Command team met last week to discuss our districtās plan to safely transition to in-person learning for our secondary students. The team will meet again this Monday, March 1, to finalize the plans. An announcement will be made by Superintendent, Todd Sesker if/when decisions are made.
If this transition is approved, our middle school and high school would shift to in-person learning four days a week. Wednesdays would continue to serve as a distance learning day. Per the Minnesota Safe Learning plan, secondary families will have the opportunity to enroll in full-time distance learning if they would prefer a remote learning option for the remainder of the school year. School leaders are encouraging students to come back to school in-person.
We will continue to require masks for students and staff, practice at least 3-foot social distancing, institute our enhanced cleaning measures, and operate on adjusted schedules that limit interactions between groups of students. Changes to these protocols would require a county case rate of under 10 per 10,000 residents. All transition plans are subject to change pending any executive orders handed down by Governor Walz.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Alli Velander
SPORT: Girls' Hockey
GRADE: 12
COACH: Mike Dietsch
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ATTENDED: Roosevelt Elementary
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR SPORT? My favorite things about hockey are my teammates and the memories that I make with them. Your teammates become your family, and it's awesome to be able to go to the rink every day knowing that the people there will make you smile and always have your back no matter what. Also, with the unfortunate things that happened to our season this year, I love how everyone is keeping a smiling face and choosing not to give up. We are working hard and having fun despite all the people who said we couldn't with our situation.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT FARIBAULT HIGH SCHOOL? Faribault High School is a place where the teachers and staff always encourage every student to be the best that they can be and to do what makes you happy. They do their best to let us know that whatever obstacles that life throws at us, we can push through.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO DO YOUR BEST? I would like to say that one thing that motivates me is the potential of succeeding. I work hard and try my very best in hopes that it will all pay off in the end. I enjoy seeing that my hard work helped me succeed and it's an amazing feeling to know that YOU did it. Yes, other people will always help me along the way like my coaches, family, and friends, however, ultimately it's up to me whether I decide to quit or give everything I have for the outcome that I want.
WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL? WHY? I would have to say that my sister is my role model. We are two years apart so a lot of my school years have been with her by my side. Sometimes, we were even on the same sports teams. She never gave up throughout high school and is continuing to give everything she has in college. She inspires me to be my best and from her example, I know that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL? If you find that you are interested in a certain subject, sport, or activity. Do it. If you end up not liking it, that's okay. But you never know until you try. Never be afraid to meet new people. From the activities you do to the classes that you are in, you will meet some people that you will end up having the best friendships. Do what makes you happy and prove those wrong who doubted you.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Some of my hobbies outside of school and sports include art and music. I love drawing and painting, and also listening and signing to music. I also really enjoy being outside, even if it's just to go on a walk.
WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? I plan to attend a four-year college and hopefully major in Graphic Design along with minoring in Photography or Psychology. However, those might also change.
Congratulations to Our February Students of the Month

FPS Partners With Rice County Chemical and Mental Health Coalition; Monthly Tip - Take it To The Box!
Do you have unneeded medication at home? According to the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, two-thirds of teens who misused pain relievers in the past year say they got them from family and friends and from home medicine cabinets. Safe disposal makes medicines less available.
FREE disposal boxes are available 7 days per week, 24 hours per day and are in the lobbies of the police departments in Faribault, Northfield, and Lonsdale as well as the Rice County Sheriffās office. For more information and for a list of local pharmacies with disposal boxes, visit ricecountycmhc.org/disposal. For more information, go to www.ricecountycmhc.org
