Language Arts

Students will be reading one of three novels for the next three weeks:

Freak the Mighty, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, and The Bridge to Terabithia. I will be meeting with reading groups during the Daily 5 language arts time.

We will be working with conjunctions, prepositions, affixes (scope and ad), and oxymorons this week.

Students are still expected to work on their Lexia goals, or spend 20 minutes twice a week on No Red Ink.

Free choice reading novels are required in class daily. We will visit the library on Tuesday, 4/5. If they don't have anything they are currently reading, they may get something then.

We are currently working on geometry and graphing. Students are responsible for knowing how to graph in quadrant 1 (two positive numbers) while reading ordered pairs (x,y). I have introduced some flat geometric shapes. We will continue on this week with classifying triangles and quadrilaterals.

***Science Fair projects are due on May 16. If the project will take a few weeks, please begin to focus on gathering the materials so that it is all completed on time. There are two parts: a written report (google classroom) and a tri-fold board.

We will be learning about three body systems over the next two weeks: digestive, excretory, and circulatory. I use alternate resources for this unit. The materials are easy to understand, and hit the fifth grade standards well.

We will be using some supplemental videos as reinforcement.

Social Studies

Students will begin their ABC Slides Presentation on their selected state beginning Monday. They will have some safe search suggestions shared with them in google classroom for internet research. I will also encourage them to get books from the library on Tuesday. Most parents have signed and returned the due dates for this assignment. If you have not, please do so ASAP. I will also post a copy in google classroom so that the kids keep up on their reports.

I will explain the presentation part in class and have suggestions for the kids to use, but they are not restricted to the suggestions.

We will also begin chapter 10 this week. As Americans, we have won our independence, but that leaves a whole new challenge: how will we govern ourselves. There were many different original state laws that we will morph into the Constitution and Bill of Rights. I love teaching these things since it is something that is a living document that we still honor today.
