Why August Is the Best Month to Tackle Home Repair Projects
When’s the best month for home repair? Some home maintenance tasks and repair projects are best saved until August. Here’s a list of the projects you should do every August.
Take Advantage of August’s Window of Opportunity
August is the month where summer’s heat starts to wane (at least near the tail end of the month) and the first hints of fall start showing themselves. It’s also the month before school starts in most regions of the US. In August, most family vacations have already been enjoyed and there’s a brief window of opportunity before you find yourself overwhelmed by tasks like raking leaves and getting your home ready for winter.
This combination makes August the ideal month to perform certain tasks and projects around the home. As you’ll see, August is a great time to get the exterior of your home in shape and looking its best. After all, you can do projects on the inside of your home any time of year.
Clean Your Deck or Patio
After a long summer of outside barbecues, parties, and get-togethers, your deck or patio has likely taken a bit of a seasonal beating. Even though the leaves will soon start falling, taking time to give your deck or patio a thorough cleaning and a fresh coat of sealant will help to avoid developing stains or water damage over the winter.
Autumn is also a great time to make updates to your deck. Whether you want to extend your deck or replace a cement patio with natural stone, this is the month to do it.

Clean and Store Your Summer Gear
Now that summer is entering the rear-view mirror, it’s time to clean your summer gear and stow it away until next summer. This can include things like inflatable swimming pools, yard toys, patio furniture pads, etc. Cleaning your gear before you store it is essential because when next summer rolls around, you won’t have to clean it then. You can pull everything out of storage and use your things without having to wait.
On the interior of your home, you can start storing your summer clothes away and replacing them with clothing more appropriate for the cooler days of fall. Just keep a few summery clothing items out in case a heat wave decides to hit in September.
Clean the Gutters
Why clean the gutters in August when you’re going to be doing it non-stop in the fall? The answer is simple. After a summer of intense thunderstorms and strong winds, the gutters on your home can become cluttered with twigs, leaves, and all manner of debris.
You will want to remove all this before the leaves start falling or you’ll risk your gutters becoming clogged early in the fall season. It also gives you a clean slate that will make removing fallen leaves much easier down the road.
Do a Thorough Pre-Fall Cleaning
Autumn is a great time to clean areas of your home that often get missed during your routine cleanings. For instance, you can clean your range hood fan and filter, the bathroom’s exhaust fan cover, the refrigerator coils, the refrigerator’s door seal, the ceiling fan blades, the baseboards and door frames, and other easily forgotten areas.
These tasks and projects are just the tip of the iceberg as to what you can do in August to make your home look its best. Take advantage of the extra time you have in August to get these and other home maintenance tasks done. You’ll find it will make your fall and winter all the more comfortable and relaxing.

It’s Back to School Time: Top Tips to Stay Sane
Parents:
- Consolidate school-related items: Have a space in your home, such as a section in your mudroom or home office, that is just for hanging backpacks and storing school supplies. This will help you and your kids know where everything is during the morning scramble to catch the bus.
- Keep a calendar handy: Between soccer practices, ballet lessons and art classes, it can be hard to keep a schedule straight. Keep a monthly desk calendar with your children’s activities in a central area so that you are all on the same page. The fridge or a bulletin board are great options. A magnetic dry-erase version makes it easy to update when plans change.
- Have low-stress mornings: Helping your kids get ready for school while you’re getting ready for work can be a challenge. Formulate a routine that both you and your children are comfortable with to take the chaos out of mornings.
And a few tips to share with your kids:
- Write things down: During the school day, a million things can happen. Recording due dates and taking notes on the specifics of an assignment will help you forego the stress of forgetfulness and earn a higher grade. On the bright side? Doodling in your notes has been shown to help with memory and focus. Sharpen your pencil!
- Do the reading: Pop quizzes are the worst. Avoid anxiety by staying current on your reading assignments. Reading a couple chapters at a time, as your teacher assigns, is much easier than trying to tackle the Odyssey the night before a test.
- Keep everything together: Stay organized with a folder or binder for each class with all of your notes and the handouts given. Adding a date to the top of your pages and keeping them in order will be helpful when it comes time to prepare for a test.
- Don’t accept bullying: Bullying can occur at any age but is never acceptable and should not be tolerated. Let your teacher or an adult you trust know if you are being mistreated or teased by your classmates. This will definitely save you stress, and will help you focus and feel safe in school.
