Counseling Through Connections

Happy Fall!
As we approach the end of the first 9 weeks, we hope your child is having a successful start to the school year. It has been busy around OMS. We encourage you to reach out to your child's grade level counselor if you have any questions throughout the school year.

6th Grade News
Mrs. Meek has been impressed by how well our sixth graders have transitioned into middle school. She has visited the classes and discussed how students can make their 6th grade year a successful one. A summary of Mrs. Meek's visit was sent via email, and an announcement was placed on her Canvas page. If you would like to enroll, please click the link below.
Mrs. Meek is currently running two small groups: time-management and self-concept. These groups were chosen based off the results from a needs assessment conducted around a month ago. Other groups will be conducted later in the year.
7th Grade News
Mr. Johnson is settling in at OMS! He is enjoying getting to know the 7th graders as we move right along through the first quarter of school. Mr. Johnson has some great plans as we move ahead into the year. He plans to begin a female self-esteem group and a male communications group near the end of October. Mr. Johnson is also looking to start a Mindfulness Monday group beginning at 8:00 am in the upcoming weeks. This group will meet every Monday until winter break.
Some of you may be asking yourself what is mindfulness? Mindfulness is a great way to help our students re-focus and to become more self-aware. We live in such a busy world. Students are constantly being distracted by many things. Taking the time to just stop, breathe, relax, and experience a calm start to the day is just what many of our students need!

8th Grade News
Mrs. Reid has been busily working on getting the PSAT ready for our 8th graders to take this past week. The PSAT is great practice for the SAT. It is never too early to begin preparing for post-secondary goals. The PSAT scores are usually not available until December. Mrs. Reid will keep families posted on how to access and understand the score report.
SC Governor's School Visit
The SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities will visit our campus on October 30 at 8:30 am to discuss the wonderful summer opportunities available. If you would like to attend, please send Mrs. Meek an email. The meeting will be held in the OMS cafeteria. Click Here to read more.
Rachel's Challenge Event
Each year our sixth grade students and all new students to our district will attend a powerful presentation empowering students to create a positive change within their school. A letter has been given to your student explaining more about the program. An email also was sent out notifying you about details. Click Here to see the letter.
October: Unite Against Bullying
This month will be a time to educate students on the topic of bullying. Our Rachel's Challenge club will also help to promote a spirit of getting along during the month. Students will be encouraged to wear orange before the month ends to show our support as we stand together united against bullying!
High Flying Eagles
Each quarter one student from each homeroom is selected by their teacher. Teachers are asked to recognize students who have been showing our High Flying EAGLE character throughout the 9 weeks.
