As we “march” into the last few months of the year, I want to thank Sunflower parents and guardians for your level of engagement in our learning community. Beyond supporting our school through fundraising efforts, several adults actively volunteer their time by serving on our site council, PTO, and with our Eagle M.O.M.S. and Watch D.O.G.S. program. Others help with various grade level initiatives like music programs and Novel Navigators book club. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but does give an indication of the many roles parents and guardians assume within our community for the benefit of all students.

The last quarter can be a difficult one for students for a variety of reasons including state assessments, schedule changes, and shifting mindsets to summer vacation plans. Please encourage your child to stay positive, work hard, and to maintain daily attendance. If you or your child has a concern, it is important to voice it immediately with your child’s teacher so we can resolve any issues in a timely manner.

The Sunflower learning community has a tremendous reputation, an innovative spirit, and a family first philosophy. I am proud to be a Sunflower staff member and parent.

Dr. Jason Jones

A completed request will be required for any student who seeks to attend a school that is not within his or her primary geographic attendance boundary or for any student who does not live within the Gardner Edgerton School district boundaries. Each request needs to be made electronically via the Google Forms link below.

In order to process student Intra-District transfer and Non-Resident requests for SY 20-21 in a timely manner, the following timeline has been established:

Monday, March 9 - Intra-District transfer and Non-Resident request hyperlinks are accessible to the public.

Friday, April 17 - Last day for families to submit transfer requests.

Families will be notified of decisions by June 13, 2020.

Some extra reminders:

 A separate request is required for EACH student.

 Requests are considered on the basis of class sizes, future enrollments, and the student’s attendance, academic progress, and conduct.

 The request is valid for one year only and may not be renewed due to class size increases (crowded conditions) or if the student does not fulfill the necessary academic progress, attendance, and conduct requirements.

 When applicable, students who do not re-apply for an intra-district transfer will be returned to their school of residency in Skyward, based on current address.

 Students/families who are delinquent as it relates to paying FEES will not be approved for transfer until fees are paid.

 If transfer is approved, transportation WILL NOT be provided by the district.

 Approval, regardless of “Reason for Request”, is NOT guaranteed.

 USD 231 reserves the right to cancel, revoke, or rescind approved requests at any time.

Growth and Development Parent Training (repeat)

March 11, 2020 6:30-8:00pm at Madison Elementary Library

Where do babies come from? What makes boys different from girls? What is puberty? These are just a FEW of the MANY questions kids ask parents as they grow and develop. These questions have often left parents grasping for answers, trying to figure out what is and is not appropriate, and oftentimes a bit sweaty. Through this growth and development training, we hope to help parents become comfortable and more familiar with age appropriate changes and questions. Preparing for what to expect and how to respond can be a great way to help us feel more confident in our parenting as well as adequately preparing our children for the world they live in. This training will be led by Sharaya Borjas, who is the owner and director of Borjas Counseling Services as well as a Clinical Supervisor for MidAmerica Nazarene University Master's in Counseling program. We hope you can attend this important, relevant training!

Snacks, drinks, and childcare will be provided.

Please RSVP for this training by March 6th using this link.

Please also indicate in the RSVP the children you will need childcare for.

Who to contact? (repeat)

If you have a concern, inquiry or suggestion, we want to help. Follow the guide below to make sure you get to the right person so your inquiry can be resolved promptly.

It is hard to believe that Kindergarten Rodeo is just around the corner on March 13, 2020!

We're doing things a little differently this year. We are combining the Kindergarten Round-Up and Rodeo into one event. There are two time slots that you will be able to choose from to attend.

To help us better plan for the 2020-21 school year, if you have an incoming kindergartner, please complete the link below. If you have a neighbor with an incoming kindergartner, feel free to share the link or direct them to our Sunflower website to complete the form. Sunflower Site Council Meetings 2019-2020

The Sunflower Site Council will be meeting at 6 pm in the library on the following dates:

9/17/19, 11/12/19, 2/11/20, 4/14/20.

All meetings are open to the public.

Kansas schools are required to establish site councils composed of the principal, teachers and other school personnel, parents, business representatives, and other community groups.

Site councils have a responsibility to provide advice and counsel in the following areas: evaluating district and school performance goals and objectives, determining methods to meet those goals and objectives, and other areas as requested by the board of education.

Remember, the work of the site council is advisory only; it makes recommendations, not decisions.

Sunflower PTO

Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has been an integral part of Sunflower Elementary for many years. Through fundraisers and fun events, they are able to provide funds to teachers, classrooms, and the school.

We invite everyone to join the Sunflower PTO Facebook page. By searching "Gardner Sunflower PTO" under Pages, you will be able to join the group and receive updated PTO information.
