Powdersville Middle School - Winter Newsletter 2020-2021
Principal's Corner
Todd Binnicker, Principal
As we approach Thanksgiving break and enter the holiday season, I want to pause and take a moment to thank all of our stakeholders at Powdersville Middle School. During these challenging times, it is easy to lose sight of all that has been accomplished so far this school year. Our district and school are one of the few who provide face-to-face instruction five days a week while also providing a virtual platform for those who choose not to attend. Our health and safety procedures, while at times are frustrating and time consuming, have helped keep the spread of COVID 19 to a minimum.
This year has definitely been a team effort. I want to thank all of our parents and guardians who have been communicating with us about students who do not feel well, keeping their students home when they are sick or letting us know of any situations as it relates to COVID19. These actions really help mitigate the effects on our students, teachers, and staff. I want to thank our VLA parents and students who are diligent about logging in every class period and who complete their assignments in a timely manner. Thanks to our face-to-face students have been tremendous at adapting to this “new normal” and I am hopeful that we will be able to return to a sense of normalcy in the near future. We are continuing to do all we can here to ensure the facility and classrooms are as safe/healthy as possible.
I am thankful for our faculty who have met the very difficult challenge of having to teach both face-to-face and virtual at the same. I want to thank our staff (secretaries, counselors, our nurse, and our assistants) for all the extra duties and responsibilities you have been assigned during this pandemic.
I am very proud of everyone’s efforts to accomplish our first priority of health and safety while continuing to provide the best learning environment possible for our students. On behalf of the faculty and staff of Powdersville Middle, I wish all of you a most joyous holiday season.

PTSO
The PTSO is very excited as we continue to live our vision "To promote a supportive and encouraging relationship between teachers, students, parents and all members of the PVMS Patriot family."
On Tuesday, October 20th, we had more than 25 volunteers make Taco Tuesday a great success. This was a great way for families to show appreciation to the teachers and staff at PVMS.
We conclude our PVMS Hoodie Sales on Wednesday, November 4th. The PTSO profited over $900. Although this is less than our normal Halloween Dance profits, we are excited about the amazing outcome.
We will be selling snacks during recess on November 17th & 18th. Most items are $2 each with some items selling for $1 or 2/$1. The students seem to really enjoy the opportunity to purchase something extra after lunch.
On November 20th, the PTSO will be providing breakfast from Kolache Factory for our teachers and staff. We will reach out soon for a few volunteers to help set-up and clean-up to make this a successful event.
On November 24th, students will have the opportunity to wear a hat or PJ with a $1 donation to the PTSO.
We have several things planned for December as well. As always, reach out to us at ptsopvms@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.
River Road Closure Announcement
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and Thrift Development Corporation are working on the intersection located at SC 153 and River Road in Anderson County. Thrift Development will need to establish a temporary road closure of River Road on the northern side or the intersection for the constructability of drainage features and safety. Access will be maintained for the properties within the road closure.
The intersection will be closed on December 7, 2020. Pending any delays due to weather or other unforeseen issues, the roadway is expected to re-open to traffic approximately February 26, 2021.

Lost & Found
There are many jackets and lunch boxes in our Lost & Found! We even have some glasses and other odds and ends. If your child's name is on the item, we will do our best to return the item to your child. Every few months, we donate the unclaimed items. Please remind your child to check the Lost & Found.
Gift Card Program - The last day to order gift cards for December is the 9th by noon!!! After that, only cards we have in inventory will be available on a first come basis. Pick up deadline is December 17.
Powdersville Middle School offers the opportunity to purchase gift cards as a great way to earn credit for your child’s school field trips and to help Powdersville Middle reach its goals for school improvement! Every gift card you purchase gives you 100% of the purchase value in addition to a designated credit percentage (80% of profit) towards your child’s trip and a designated percentage (20% of profit) towards the school's improvement goals. This program has paid the entire field trip cost for many of our students and their parents in past years. Consistency is the key! Don’t buy gas without gift cards! Ingles and WalMart/Sam’s Club give discounts on gas if you buy with gift cards! Don’t buy groceries, eat out, or go to the movies without gift cards! Don’t buy birthday, wedding, or shower gifts without gift cards! Don’t do home improvements or purchase appliances without gift cards! Definitely don’t go shopping without gift cards! Encourage relatives, neighbors, and co-workers to order gift cards in your child’s name.
There are many gift cards available through our online ordering. To get started, go to www.scripzone.com. Our group ID is 864269PMS. It is best to use your child’s name when you register as a new user.
Order by Tuesday morning and get them Thursday afternoon. You may pick them up at the school or we can send them home with your child.
We are not able to accept postdated checks.
A record is kept of your child’s credit through our online software. A record of your credit may be requested through e-mail (pvmsgiftcards@gmail.com).
We are not able to exchange gift cards after they have been picked up or sent home by your child. Please check your written or online order carefully before submitting. If we make a mistake in filling your order, we will be glad to make the necessary correction. We keep order forms on file for verification.
Plan ahead for what you will need for holidays. Filling orders the week before holidays is very challenging and availability is not guaranteed. Order early to ensure that you get what you need!
