21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
This past week showed our spring athletes GIVE THE TOTAL EFFORT ... GET BACK UP ... DO THEIR BEST ... and find VICTORY in all sorts of ways! BRICKIE PRIDE was in abundant supply and in the end, all of our kids deserved to hold the CHAMPIONSHIP BELT above their heads!!
YO ADRIAN ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Baseball
After a HOT start to the season, the Brickies were knocked down a bit last week with 3 straight losses against some of the area's best teams. Since our theme this week revolves around ROCKY ... any guesses to what you think our boys did this week after getting knocked down? THEY GOT BACK UP!! Not only did Hobart collectively get back up, but they WON 4 IN A ROW including wins at the RailCats stadium over Highland and at home over 2018 class 2A state champion Boone Grove and Duneland Conference team Chesterton!! YO ADRIAN ... THEY DID IT!!
On Monday night, it was SHOWTIME in Gary as Hobart participated in the 18th Annual RailCats High School Challenge! After a slight delay due to the 1st game of the night taking a little longer than expected, the game was on against NCC rival Highland! The Brickies scored 1 run in the 1st after senior Ryan Ellis drew a walk ... freshman Jevan Andrews doubled and senior Jaden Deel singled to score Ellis! In the top of the 4th, junior Marc Enslen stole 2nd & 3rd and SCORED on a double-steal to make it 2-0 Hobart! Highland battled back in the bottom half of the inning and scored 2 runs of their own to tie it up. In the 5th, Deel absolutely CRUSHED one toward South America and our boys were back on top 3-2!! With the final outcome still in doubt, sophomore Cam Gonzalez put the proverbial nails in the coffin with a bases-loaded, 2-out DOUBLE that scored 3 runs and gave the Brickies a 6-2 cushion that ended up being the final score!! Enslen was UNBELIEVABLE on the mound as he tossed 6 innings, struck out 11, and DID NOT SURRENDER A HIT! Junior Ivan Balboa came on in relief and retired the final 3 batters of the contest to help Hobart earn it's 3rd NO-HITTER of the season!! AMAZING!!!
Tuesday offered a rematch of the previous night ... only this time, the game was in Hobart ... and Michael Jackson would be proud because it was another THRILLER! Trailing 3-1 in the 5th, the Brickies manufactured 2 runs to tie it at 3! Two scoreless innings later, the stage was set for some more 7th-inning heroics. With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the 7th, Andrews BELTED one that sailed over the screen-covered fence and gave our boys a DRAMATIC 4-3 WALK-OFF VICTORY!! You could almost hear Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray saying, "It might be ... it could be ... IT IS ... A HOMERUN"!! Gonzalez and Balboa kept Hobart in it with some terrific pitching and Jevan did the rest in this edge-of-your-seat masterpiece!! INCREDIBLE!!
On Thursday, 2018 class 2A state champion Boone Grove was next on the list of unfortunate teams facing the Brickies this week. Hobart was AWESOME against the Wolves ... completely shutting them down with some outstanding D-D-D-DEFENSE and getting plenty of offense, scoring 9 runs in both the 1st and CRUISING to an easy 13-6 WIN!! Senior Gavin Gallagher picked up his 4th victory of the season on the mound as Hobart collected 10 hits and 10 walks at the plate against Boone.
FINALLY IT'S FRIDAY and the Brickies welcomed another Trojan mascot to the Friendly City ... this time from Chesterton. Similar to Thursday's game against Boone Grove, the visitors got on the board with a run in the top of the 1st inning, but the Brickie bats were ALIVE AND WELL again as our boys scored 6 in the 1st two innings and picked up 4 more in the bottom of the 6th to CLOBBER the Trojans from Chesterton 10-3! Once again showing poise at the plate, Hobart drew 11 walks and only needed 6 hits to score 10 runs and the D-D-D-DEFENSE was FANTASTIC! Andrews and Balboa each had two hits and Balboa went the distance for the 'W'.
Hobart is now 12-5 on the year and an even 3-3 in NCC play. The Brickies travel to face arch rival Andrean on Monday and welcome the 59ers to Hobart on Tuesday - BE THERE!

Thank you to Kyle J Photos for so many amazing shots from the home of the Railcats ... US Steel Yard!

Softball
Monday over at Merrillville, it was the Lady Brickies who made the Pirates WALK THE PLANK! Hobart put up 10 RUNS in the 1st inning ... then 5 more between the 3rd & 5th to earn the VICTORY by a COLOSSAL 15-4 margin! Our girls pounded out 13 hits in the contest - led by senior Alyssa Peterson (3-for-3 with a run and 4 RBI) and classmate Hannah Camarena (2-for-3 with 2 HOMERUNS, 2 runs scored & 3 RBI)! Junior Sydney Belk also notched 2 hits and sophomore Kylee Watts LAUNCHED ONE OVER THE FENCE in the win!! Watts and senior Neely Fisk worked 5 strong innings on the mound to keep the Lady Pirates offense out of sync all night.
On Wednesday, Hobart was scheduled to travel to KV to face the NCC-leading Lady Kougars, but a lightning alert and lots of rain caused the cancellation. This one is rescheduled for Tuesday, May 11th.
Thursday, Griffith was the destination for our ROAD WARRIORS and the Lady Panthers were poised to pounce. Unfortunately for them, BRICKS DON'T FLINCH! Similar to the Merrillville game on Monday, our girls EXPLODED for 12 runs in the top of the 1st and scored at least 1 run in EVERY INNING to CAGE the Panthers 19-8!! Seniors Saylem Smith (3-for-4 with a double, 2 runs & 2 RBI) and Camarena (3-for-5 with a double, triple, HOMERUN, 3 runs & 5 RBI) again led the ATTACK on offense and freshman Morgan Ellenberger pitched the complete game to earn the W!
On Saturday, Hobart made it's final stop of the week over at LaPorte for the Lady Slicers tournament. In the opener, the Lady Brickies were matched up against South Bend St. Joe. St. Joe scored in the 1st to take an early lead, but our girls responded with 7 RUNS in the pivotal 4th inning ... sophomore Alyssa Janik and senior Sarah Joswiak each singled in runs before Camarena dialed long-distance with the bases loaded! YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOOOOAAAAAARD ... YEESSSSS!!! The GRAND SLAM by Hannah helped Hobart pull away for good and secure the hard fought 9-5 VICTORY!! Ellenberger pitched 7 innings and struck out 4 in the win! Unfortunately, after the dramatic win over St. Joe, the Lady Brickies would drop the final two games of the tournament ... a 4-3 nail-bitter against South Bend Adams in extra innings and a 2-0 pitcher's duel vs. Fort Wayne Carroll. Our girls placed 4th out of the 8-team field over at LaPorte.
Hobart is currently ranked #9 in the area, is 11-5 on the season, and 2-1 in the NCC. Our girls will face #1-ranked and undefeated Lake Central & #6-ranked Highland this week before returning home Thursday to battle Andrean. LET'S GO BRICKS!!
#GIRLPOWER
THANK YOU to our Softball Boosters for some GREAT pics of our girls in action!
Boys Golf
Golf is a tough sport that requires repetition, focus, and patience. Even thought it didn't snow this past week, rain and wind provided an additional challenge out there. Still, our guys CONTINUED to stay the COURSE and improved yet again!
Tuesday against Portage, the Brickies were hoping to GO THE DISTANCE or score a KNOCK-OUT. The Indians had other plans and left town with a close 211-221 win. Senior Chad Tomaga was once again the medalist for Hobart with a team-best 51 over 9 holes. Junior Ethan Cover, senior Logan Kingery, and freshman Parker Glass rounded out the top 4.
On Wednesday, the Bricks were supposed to face Highland over at Wicker Park, but down came the rain and washed the match out.
Saturday, the Brickies headed South to DeMotte to play in the Kankakee Valley Invitational at Sandy Pines. Although the wind wreaked some havoc in the fairways, our boys PLAYED THROUGH and ended up placing 14th out of the 17 teams in attendance ... narrowly missing a top 10 finish by just 17 strokes (*17 might sound like a lot, but stretched out over 18 holes between multiple competitors ... and it's actually only a few strokes per golfer). Glass was Hobart's best on Saturday with a 107 ... Cover & Kingery each shot 111 ... and freshman Tommy Snemis was 4th for the Brickies with 113.
Hobart is close ... showing improvement a little each week. Pretty soon, they're GONNA FLY NOW!!
#BETHEBALL
Track & Field
The Brickies were over at Highland on Tuesday night ... which from a weather perspective was possibly the BEST ( ... I say the BEST) night of the spring season so far! With the sun shining, our student athletes were ready to GO THE DISTANCE!
For the ladies, it was business as usual! After DOMINATING Andrean two weeks ago, our girls put on another show at Highland on Tuesday in SOUNDLY defeating the Lady Trojans 85-38!! The sprint crew SWEPT the top 3 places in both the 100 & 200 in the same order with senior Anisha Lewis placing 1st, sophomore Asia Donald finishing 2nd and junior Dominique Clemons right on their heels in 3rd! Hurdles were another area where the Lady Brickies SHINED ... sophomore Haylie Skripac and senior Faith Kietzman went 1-2 in the 100m hurdles and the combo of freshman Cailey Weber & Skripac followed suit in going 1-2 in the 300m race! Juniors Shanena Knight and Anna Wood placed 1st & 2nd in the shotput and discus throws and sophomore Sarah Romeo WON the 400m dash to help Hobart stay undefeated in NCC competition with a record of 2-0! AWESOME WORK LADIES!!
After their HUGE WIN over Andrean two weeks ago, our boys unfortunately ran into a determined Highland squad on Tuesday and had to BATTLE for every point. In spite of some FANTASTIC individual performances, the Brickies couldn't get quite get over the hump and lost a close meet 71-60. Some key performances for Hobart included a SWEEP in the pole vault by brothers Riley & Cody Johnston ... a 1-2 finish in the 3200m run by juniors Joe Meagher & Jonah Wells ... and a victory in the high jump by sophomore Gavin Miller-Lane who set a new PR with his jump of 5'10"!

The Brickies finished 9th in the field and had some OUTSTANDING individual performances! The freshman tandem of Ramirez & Mattel both broke the 5-minute barrier in the mile to earn 6th place ... Meagher raced to a PR in the 2-mile with a time of 10:36 and partnered with classmate Jonah Wells for 7th place ... and Cody Johnston cleared 14'6" to WIN the pole vault!!
With the NCC Championship a little over a week away, the Lady Brickies are undefeated at 2-0 and the boys are an even 1-1 in conference action. HUGE meets against KV, Lowell & Munster this week will determine the final standings going into the championship meet. WE ... WE BELIEVE ... WE BELIEVE THAT ... you know the rest!!

THANK YOU to Coach K for all the awesome pics!
Girls Tennis
Tuesday, the Lady Brickies were on the road in NCC action against the Highland Lady Trojans. Our girls have been playing better and better this spring, but were still looking for a signature win. Well ... they had the EYE OF THE TIGER against Highland and defeated the NCC foe by the final score of 3-2! Hobart secured wins at #2 singles (junior Emma Novak) and BOTH #1 (seniors Lauren Cicillian & Katrina Hansen) & #2 doubles (seniors Emma Lewis & Hayley Borman) in STRAIGHT SETS!!
On Wednesday, our girls were set to square off against East Chicago Central, but wet courts and a lightning alert caused the cancellation. This one has yet to be rescheduled.
Thursday, Hobart traveled to Munster to take on the 2019 defending NCC Champions and one of the area's best teams. In a tough contest, the Lady Brickies FOUGHT HARD and had the Lady Mustangs ON THE ROPES! Unfortunately, Munster had just enough firepower and Hobart lost a tough one 1-4. Despite the result, the Lady Brickies got a chance to see how they measured up to one of the very best Da Region has to offer. As much as no one likes to lose, it was probably a good test with IHSAA Sectional play beginning in 3 weeks.
On Saturday, the Lady Brickies traveled to New Prairie High School for an all-day tournament. I know ... I know, it was just a tad windy out there ... but our girls SHINED!!! As a team, Hobart was RUNNER-UP to South Bend Adams in the 8-team field and EVERY varsity player finished in the top 4!
Senior Addison Kasch - 3rd place @ #1 singles
Junior Emma Novak - 2nd place @ #2 singles
Junior Aoife Combs - 4th place @ #3 singles
Seniors Lauren Cicillian & Katrina Hansen - 2nd place @ #1 doubles
Seniors Emma Lewis & Hayley Borman - CHAMPIONS @ #2 doubles
WHAT A PERFORMANCE against some TOUGH competition and in some less-than-ideal conditions!!
#ACES
Seniors Hayley Borman & Emma Lewis were #2 doubles CHAMPIONS @ New Prairie on Saturday!
Unified Track & Field
On Thursday, the Brickies were at Kankakee Valley for a dual meet against the Kougars. No scores were kept, but EVERYONE got in on the action and showed BRICKIE PRIDE as they competed with everything they had!
Here are a few highlights from Thursday's meet @ KV:
100m Dash - Freshman Mason Jackson - 1st in Heat 1, freshman Jack Guzman - 2nd in Heat 1, senior Jacob Yardley - 4th in Heat 1, senior Dominic Stengel - 2nd in Heat 2, sophomore Sarah Kessler - 3rd in Heat 2, senior Trevor Drapac - 2nd in Heat 3, freshman Andrew Renn - 3rd in Heat 3, junior Sydney Mock - 4th in Heat 3

The Brickies have 1 more regular season meet ... Thursday @ Valpo ... before IHSAA Sectional competition begins. LET'S GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
