Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 21 March 2019
Dear Parents and Staff
In last week’s newsletter I wrote about the three pillars of Lent; Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving and provided a copy of Pope Francis’ ideas for Fasting. This week my focus is on Prayer. Where does prayer fit into each of our lives? Is it something that we only revert to when times are difficult or is it something more active and a vibrant part of our daily or weekly routine? As we approach the Third Sunday of Lent it may be an appropriate time to reflect upon the importance of prayer in our lives and the power that lies within it to guide us on our Spiritual journey.
Pope Francis has suggested the following way for us to always have prayer “handy”.
SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
Please remember to keep in your prayers the children who will make their First Reconciliation next Thursday evening and will attend their Reconciliation workshop
with their parents this evening.CONGRATULATIONS!
Yesterday morning, in front of parishioners and his Year Four classmates and Teachers, Jhett Playle was received into the Catholic Church by Fr Quynh. It was a beautiful occasion for us to all join with Jhett as he continues his Spiritual journey. Jhett will now receive the Sacrament of Penance next Thursday evening along with the Year Three children and will receive the Sacrament of Eucharist with his classmates in June. Congratulations Jhett!
MRS STAPLETON
I have spoken with Joanita today and her recovery is progressing smoothly, albeit slowly, after her quite major surgery. She will need at least another week off work and then be guided by her Specialist’s advice. I have expressed to Joanita just how much we are all missing her and praying for her continued recovery and return to school once she is fully recovered. She is in very good spirits and can’t wait to be back in control at the front desk.
SPECIAL BIRTHDAY WISHES
It has been a very festive week at Notre Dame as we have celebrated four very significant staff birthdays. We all offer our heartfelt congratulations to Daniela Boyle (Monday), Meghann Gilmour (Tuesday), Leoni Notte (Wednesday) and Linda Harland (Thursday), however, there will be no mention of how many candles were required for each cake. Congratulations to all four ladies upon reaching their special milestone.
DADS’ AND KIDS’ CAMPOUT
Due to our very busy first Term at Notre Dame this event will be held early in Term two on Friday 17 May. A flyer advertising the campout is included later in the newsletter. As there will not be any tents available for hire at this year’s campout, it may be a good idea to have a look at BCF as they have a sale on all tents for this weekend only. Prices start at $39 and if you get set up now you may even be able to have a practise run at home prior tothe campout.

Year One Class News
What a busy few weeks we have had in Year One!
Lent has begun and the children have all chosen an act of kindness they can do for others during this time. We are trying to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
We are working hard on writing recounts - retelling events from our weekend. We use our whole body to help us remember to include when, who, what and where. Ask us to show you how we include full stops in our writing. We have also enjoyed reading many of the Joy Cowley stories and bringing these to life. We have been working on retelling the main events in the stories and even used puppets to help us act them out.
This term we have also been busy Tech Wizzes. We have learnt the apps Pic Collage and Book Creator and are getting very clever with editing these.

Year 4-6 Swimming Carnival – Bayswater Waves (Thursday, 14 March)
Last Thursday, students from years 4-6 participated in the annual Notre Dame Senior Swimming Carnival held at Bayswater Waves. All students are to be congratulated on the way they participated on the day. We were blessed with beautiful weather and fantastic support from so many parents coming to watch and help out. I would personally like to congratulate the parent helpers and teachers for their hardwork and dedication throughout the day, as well as the faction captains for their fantastic leadership throughout their first carnival as captains. This helped create a really positive environment for the carnival, as well as a bit of a healthy rivalry between the factions. This year marked a slight change in form for a few factions, with Nagle the big movers this year. It was a fantastic competition throughout the whole day, especially with the year 6 group. With races finishing within milliseconds of each other, keeping Mr Tyrell (Chief Judge) and parent judges on their toes for those races. Below are the Champion Boy and Girl results for each year group:
Year 4 Champion Boy – Kyle Johadi (Mercy)
Year 4 Champion Boy R/UP – Callan Hunter (Nagle)
Year 4 Champion Girl – Ava Lee (Nagle)
Year 4 Champion Girl R/UP – Leah van den Adel (Prendiville)
Year 5 Champion Boy – Fynn Tomasini (McAuley)
Year 5 Champion Boy R/UP – Dylan Austen (McAuley)
Year 5 Champion Girl – Eliza Seinor (Prendiville)
Year 5 Champion Girl R/UP – Madison Loiacono (McAuley)
Year 6 Champion Boy – Charles Empleo (Prendiville)
Year 6 Champion Boy R/UP – Ross Proctor (Nagle)
Year 6 Champion Girl – Jamiela Penales (McAuley)
Year 6 Champion Girl R/UP – Ella Blake (Mercy)
It was a tight tussle the whole day, with Nagle and Prendiville neck and neck for the majority of the carnival. Congratulations to Prendiville who took out their 6th Swimming Carnival, with this being a hat-trick of victories. Well done to all factions!
