News from Mrs. Diggs
Patriot Families,
Can you believe 2018 is coming to an end? It's hard to believe that December is already here. Even though winter break is upon us, we have loads of learning occurring here at Providence. Currently, our students are continuing to be immersed in the Writing Units of Study in kindergarten all the way through fifth grade. Our writing curriculum this year is focused on developing authentic writers. During Writers Workshop, our students are introduced to a mini-lesson that is focused on enhancing specific, targeted writing skills. Following the mini-lesson, students have the opportunity to write, conference with a teacher, and receive small group instruction and feedback. At the closure of each lesson, our teaching point (or writing skill taught in the mini-lesson) is reinforced while students share their writing as well as their reflections. Be on the lookout on our Social Media and SeeSaw next week as our kindergarten students are wrapping up their latest unit of study and holding a writing celebration as they share not only what they've learned but also how they've grown as writers. In addition to our Writing Units of Study, students are receiving guided reading instruction to build and develop reading comprehension skills. In math, we continue to focus on building problem solving and critical thinking skills. In science and social studies, students are learning about the world around them. We encourage you to review your grade level newsletters, SeeSaw or check in with your classroom teachers to learn about the specific Essential Learning Standards your Patriot is engaging in throughout the course of this grading period.
In addition to academic content learning, students are continuing to learn about building and sustaining positive relationships as we continue our learning with Restorative Practices. In addition to the classroom treatment agreements and positive messages of affirmation, students are now engaging in 2 Minute Conversations and Step in Circles as a means of finding commonalities and sparking discussion with peers who hold similar interests and commonalities. These quick conversations have helped us recognize that we are more alike in ways we may have never known. Our hope is that through beginning these conversations and discussions, we can teach our students how to seek out and include others they may not have thought to build friendships with before.
I am truly blessed to be able to serve our students, staff, and our Providence community. If I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me by calling the school at 940-369-1900 or via email at jdiggs@dentonisd.org.
With Patriot Pride,
Jairia Diggs, M.Ed.
Patriot Emergency Operations Update
As you are aware, our campus has a Patriot Emergency Operations Plan that allows us to reflect upon ways that we keep our students, staff and community safe. Many of you may have heard that our campus went into a Shelter in Place Drill this month. The Shelter in Place Procedure is utilized when we need to clear our hallways for minor emergencies and/or to allow emergency personnel to quickly access an individual needing medical attention. Just so you are aware, we consistently practice various drills as part of our Emergency Operations Plan. As a staff, we routinely practice drill procedures as we continue to teach our Patriot Learning Community how to be safe even at unexpected times. We encourage you to ask your student about ways that we have learned about staying safe while at school. Thank you for continuing to hold conversations about ways to remain safe with your Patriot learner. We truly appreciate your partnership!
