Week of September 20, 2021

Hello RMS Knights and Families

Our September's Honor the Castle theme is "Making Meaningful Connections". Making meaningful connections is all about the "Why"...fostering an environment where our Richards Middle School community is being safe, respectful and responsible around the building.

This week’s mindset message for the week of September 20th states that “My actions make an impact…and I have a choice each day for my impact to be for the greater good of others”.

We are looking forward to Week Three with our Knights!

Meet the Teacher Night Open House Thank you!

Thank you to our RMS Families who were able to attend our Meet The Teacher Open House this past Thursday evening. It was great to have an opportunity to have our families spend time with our staff and student leaders who assisted with our families navigating the building.

Please feel free to view our staff's MTTN Open House videos at the link below.

Attendance/Tardy Policy

Please make every effort to ensure your child arrives to school on time. Students who arrive late for 1st hour repeatedly will receive attendance intervention and we will be in communication with the family.

Punctuality is a life skill that we continue to model at RMS. This past Friday, we conducted our first tardy sweep between 2nd and 3rd hour. This procedure is in place to ensure students are using their time wisely in the hall and arriving to class in a timely, safe manner. This first "Sweep" served as a warning and a teachable moment as we closed out week 2. Moving forward, attendance intervention and consequences will take place for future tardy sweeps.

TikTok Challenge - IMPORTANT

Parents - there is a National TikTok challenge in which students are instructed to trash the restrooms at school. Please have a conversation with your child about respecting their school. It's not only frustrating to talk with students about vandalism but disheartening.

If students trash a restroom, we are forced to close it down until it can be repaired or cleaned. When caught, students will de disciplined by the school, have to pay restitution, as well as face potential citations from Fraser Police.

After School Activity Expectations

We are looking forward to opening up our first RMS home athletic events this week with our 7th and 8th grade football team. With our after school events picking up, we thought this was a good time to review student expectations at after school activities, including Fraser High School Athletic Events. We encourage and value student and family support at these events, however, please review the following expectations for a fun, safe way to participate at these events. Should these expectations need to be adjusted, we will communicate with our families.

  • Students must leave RMS building for after school events. For Volleyball/Basketball, students may re-enter RMS 15 minutes prior to the start of the game through door 37.
  • Backpacks are allowed at RMS events that take place directly after school, however subject to backpack checks.
  • No backpacks allowed for FHS Athletic Events
  • No outside balls or noise makers at events
  • No outside food or drink is permitted
  • Students are expected to sit in the bleachers and not walk around the facility or gather in common areas unless utilizing the concession stand or bathroom.
  • Students are not to sit or walk to Visiting Bleachers
  • No standing on the fence/rail line of bleachers to avoid obstructing view and exits
  • Once all students have their IDs they must have them for all games
  • If students cannot abide by these expectations they will be asked to leave

Recognition Of Constitution Day on Friday, Sept. 17th

On Friday, September 17th, we recognized the observance of Constitution Day with a P.A. announcement to our students and staff that this day commemorates the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

Reminder - Outside Food and Beverage Policy

The District does not allow the delivery of food and beverages from outside vendors or fast food establishments for a student’s breakfast or lunch meal. All meals are to be provided by either our Food Service program or prepared at home and sent with your student. The District works hard to provide a variety of healthy, good-tasting food in its cafeterias, and students are always free to bring their own lunch to school.

Students are prohibited from ordering delivery food during the school day, either directly from a restaurant or through smart phone applications and websites such as Grubhub, DoorDash, and Uber Eats.

Student ID Cards

Last week students that did not have an ID card from orientation picture day were called down to the Media Center to be issued an ID. If your student was absent or missed that opportunity, upon their return, they may come to the Media Center to get an ID.

If a student loses their ID, they may come to the Media Center to purchase a replacement ID for $3.00.

In addition, students must carry their IDs with them at all times. Lanyards are available for purchase in the Knights Nook, as an option.

An Important Message from the Macomb County Health Department

The State of Michigan requires children to be age-appropriately vaccinated to enroll in school programs, unless a valid exemption applies.

If your student is not up to date, letters will be coming home this week in the mail to inform families about missing vaccinations that must be addressed before October 1.
