Predictable Positive Learning Environment and/or Behavior Tip of the Week
Data: Positive Office Referrals vs. Major Office Referrals to Date (4:1 is the goal)
(As of 9/6)
Instructional Compass: Guiding Learning Tips/Points
Too often, teachers will choose one student at a time to respond to teacher led questions: teacher initiates question, student responds, teacher evaluates response (for example: “Good job!”), and the cycle continues. Challenge yourself to create more of a discussion by asking students to listen to one another and respond to each other’s ideas before responding back to the teacher. Try some of the strategies below to get all students involved.
Create a classroom environment where students are in teams of 4 (face partner/shoulder partner).
For whole group, create some silent hand signals for “I agree,” “I disagree,” or “I’d like to add on” to get all students involved in the discussion.
Use Kagan Structures to build community in your classroom so students feel safe responding to others and to make work fun and engaging for everyone.
Have students “Turn & Talk” to get all students to respond during a minilesson or Read Aloud.
Use whiteboards so all students can respond (write or draw) simultaneously while you do a quick check for comprehension.
Please sign up for a time that we can have a collaborative conversation together and create some goals for your students.
Your Coach,
Terri Miller
