Going out with a Bang!
On Tuesday afternoon we held our annual literary luncheon. Three classes of grade six students met with seniors from the Morill Library reading program to discuss the book Refugee by Alan Gatz. It was wonderful to see the discussions occurring and connections being made during this event.
On Thursday and Friday the sixth grade went on a trip to the New England Aquarium. Despite rain delays and bus misadventures, everyone had an excellent time touching sting rays and chilling with some penguins.
The final concert for grade 8 students was this past Tuesday, it is always a pleasure to listen to these students play. Their hard work and dedication pays off. It is impressive the level of growth that occurs over the three years of middle school!
As you will read below, the PTO voted in several new board members to lead the CMS PTO for next year. There are still positions open, check below for opportunities.
And on Friday, we had the grade 8 dinner dance, sponsored by the PTO. Students were dressed in Hollywood Style and walked the red carpet on their way inside.
One last week to go with many fun events each day. We have moved grade 6 Field Day to Monday due to inclement weather predicted for Tuesday. Grade 8 will head to Canobie Lake and grade 7 is off to Everwood. Stay tuned for a busy week!
Summer Program by Wellsley College
Researchers from the Youth, Media, & Wellbeing Research Lab at Wellesley Centers for Women and the Computer Science Department at Wellesley College are hosting a summer workshop that will have two main components: a) research study on how young teens can co-design a mobile phone/web app that will encourage prosocial and healthy uses of social media and b) a fun, interactive group learning experience that will feature expert speakers on STEM concepts (human-computer interaction, prototyping), digital citizenship, and making positive choices to promote self-esteem and social support online, particularly in the early middle school years when social media and smartphone use is relatively new. This four day summer workshop will culminate in several prototypes of a healthy social media use app, co-designed by students at Coakley Middle School.
The workshop will run from Monday, July 16 - Thursday, July 19 OR Monday, July 22 - Thursday, July 25, depending on enrollment numbers. Drop off will begin at 9:00am and we ask that students are picked up at 2pm. The workshop is free to all participants and each student will receive a $10 gift card for every day they complete along with a free t-shirt. We will celebrate with a pizza party on the last day of the workshop.
Eligibility: All students at Coakley Middle School, with preference to students entering 7th or 8th grade in Fall 2019, students who participated in the social media interview conducted this spring, and students who can attend all 4 days of the workshop.
