Sequoyah Phoenix Weekly Newsletter 3/17/23
Principal's Message
Good Evening Sequoyah Families,
On Thursday your scholar brought home a letter to sign up for Scholar-Led Conferences. If you were not able to send that back to school with your scholar today, please be sure to send it back on Monday. If your scholar doesn’t bring it back on Monday, a conference time will be assigned for you. Your scholar will bring home a confirmation letter for your date and time for the conference on Monday 3/27.
If you need to reschedule a conference time, please contact your scholar’s advisory teacher, or front office. Conferences are held on Wednesday 3/29, Thursday 3/30, and Friday 3/31. We are looking forward to seeing everyone soon!
National Reading Month
Can you read for 7 days in a row?
Daily reading has many benefits, including improving reading comprehension skills, creativity, critical thinking, and more. To encourage this habit, as part of National Reading Month, we’re challenging all FWPS scholars to the Reading Marathon Challenge!
How to Participate in 3 Easy Steps:
Scholars must read for 7 days in a row (a week) during the month of March for a set length of time based on grade level:
Grades PreK-5: 30 minutes
Grades 6-8: 45 minutes
Grades 9-12: 1 hour
Track your progress in the Reading Marathon Challenge reading log
Turn in your completed reading log to your school’s office or library by April 14, 2023 for a prize.
Prizes will be distributed by school. More information to come.
If you are unable to download and print the reading log, you can pick up a reading log from the main office or library at your school.

STEM Exploration Night Shuttle Bus Routes
STEM Exploration Night will return as an in-person event on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, 6-8 pm at Federal Way High School! Mark your calendars to save the date for the sixth annual STEM event, which offers PreK-12th grade scholars fun, interactive opportunities to explore, prepare, and launch into STEM opportunities and STEM careers!
As with previous in person STEM Exploration Nights, FWPS is continuing its commitment to ensuring the fun STEM event is accessible for families by providing dedicated shuttle buses from areas across our district. Parking is limited at Federal Way High School, and bus shuttles are a great option to get to the event.
Find the route list here: www.fwps.org/STEMExpo/Shuttle
All scholars are welcome to ride the shuttle with a parent or guardian. High school scholars can ride the shuttle by themselves by presenting a permission slip signed by their parent or guardian upon boarding the bus.
Learn more about STEM Exploration Night at www.fwps.org/STEMExpo. For questions, email stemexpo@fwps.org.
Hear what do look forward to at this year’s STEM Exploration Night!

Calling all scholars in grades 3-12: Nominate a staff member for the Because of You Award!
Students in grades 3-12 are invited to nominate any Federal Way Public Schools staff member in the district they believe has positively impacted them, their school, and/or their community for the “Because of You” award!
Students can fill out a nomination form on the district’s website at www.fwps.org/BecauseOfYou. All nomination forms are due by end of month.

After School Tutoring
As a reminder we are offering a after-school tutoring program with our Sequoyah Alumni. Tutoring takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-3:30 with staff supervision. As there are no activity buses, you will have to provide transportation home. This is a wonderful opportunity for your scholar to take advantage of extra academic support.
Tutor.com
Tutor.Com, a free service offered by FWPS for scholars in 4th-12th grades. Whether it’s for one-time support or weekly homework support, Tutor.Com is ready to provide a tutor to help scholars.
