3rd Grade News
The third grade has had a successful and busy start to the third trimester! In reading and writing the third grade has been focusing on the genre of nonfiction. Students began the reading unit identifying nonfiction text features and determining how they help the reader to better understand the text. Students will be using a variety of nonfiction mentor texts to write their own nonfiction books on topics they are personally interested in.
Later in the trimester, we will use our knowledge of nonfiction texts to write an informational essay based on research. In math, students have been learning about fractions. Students have been comparing fractions, ordering fractions, and starting to recognize equivalent fractions.
We are looking forward to the warm Spring weather and a productive last trimester!
Pi Day in grade 4
Ms. Schaefer’s 4th graders celebrated Pi Day on March 14th. After learning about pi (the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter; an infinite number that starts with 3.14), they graphed several beginning digits of pi to create a city skyline art project (“Pi-scrapers”). See the video below on Pi Day!

Kindergarten Reading
In kindergarten, we are working on using our reading strategies when we approach a word that is not on our class word wall. We have been reviewing our “super powers”, and spending time talking about characters, character feelings, and the setting of the story.
In writing, we are working on creating how-to pieces. Students have been writing about something they know how to do, and teaching it to others! We are using transition words (first, next, then, and last) to tell our story across multiple pages. Some examples are: how to brush your teeth, how to get ready for school, and how to play soccer.
In science, we are discussing natural resources in preparation for Earth Day. We have discussed the differences between needs and wants, as well as animal habitats. Ranger Mark came in for a special visit to talk about animal habitats during the winter months.
Currently in social studies, we are beginning to talk about community helpers. We will continue to learn about different helpers within the Trumbull community.
Finally, in math we are identifying and creating two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. We have been describing the attributes of the shapes. Shape bingo was a class favorite!
