Dual Language Connection
Conexiones en Dos Idiomas
October 2018/Octubre 2018
Dear Dual Language Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through October. By this time, you are starting to see signs of your child’s academic growth. As your child moves up grade levels in the Dual Language program, you may have noticed that his or her pace in advancing levels within the 100 Book Challenge appears to slow down.
It is quite normal and expected that kindergarten and first grade students move up levels very quickly as they acquire foundational Spanish literacy skills. However, as students move from grade level to grade level, their progress is better reflected through skill and vocabulary development within complex texts. Therefore, we do not expect to see students advance color levels as fast in older grades.
However, all students have a “Power Goal” that they are currently working towards for mastery. The Power Goal is a key skill specifically assigned to students by their teacher. The Power Goal is individualized based on where children fall in the Spanish literacy continuum. Students work on their assigned Power Goal until they achieve mastery. Then they are assigned a new Power Goal at a higher level.
The linked documents below may provide more insight into grade level expectations for Spanish literacy through the 100 Book Challenge.
