A Message from the Williston Schools Leadership Team
by Jacqueline Parks, Williston Central School Principal
Starting soon, students in grades 3-9 and 11 will take the spring state-mandated assessments. These assessments provide insights that will help us to better know our learners. The 2023 Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program (VTCAP) replaces the SBAC and the Vermont Science Assessment that were used in previous years. Some are referring to this as Cognia. It is administered in the following subjects and grades:
English Language Arts (ELA) Grades 3-9
Mathematics Grades 3-9
Science Grades 5, 8, and 11
The ELA and Mathematics assessments assess the Common Core State Standards (CSSS) for English and Mathematics, respectively. The Science assessment assesses the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The spring 2023 Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program (VTCAP) will be administered in a computer-based test format, similar to the structure used for SBAC and the VT Science Assessment.
The Vermont Agency of Education has set the testing window for April 12 - May 26, which includes any time needed for makeup tests. However, the first team testing at WCS will be during the week of 5/1.
Each team will notify families as to their testing schedule
During test sessions, students will be using their school-provided Chromebooks. Mobile phones and smartwatches will be put away and will not be accessed for test security purposes.
The tests are “adaptive” for most students but not for all. That element varies by grade level and if some students have accommodations or certain settings in place. Adaptive means that the test adapts to their ability level based on student responses.
What can you do to help?
Please make sure that students are in school when their grade or team is testing. That will reduce the need for follow-up and makeup testing.
Please help to ensure that students are well-rested.
This is new for all of us, including students and the adults in our schools who will help with the test administration. We will all do our best to make sure that this is a comfortable and low-stress experience for all.

Notes From Nurse Love
Spring Allergy Season
When should I start allergy medicine for spring?
You should start taking them anywhere from 2-4 weeks before your allergy season begins. This should get you to the point where you are protected against pollen allergies.
When Is Vermont Allergy Season?
Vermont’s mild climates during the spring, summer, and fall make perfect conditions for pollen allergies. The winters do get very cold, and this provides residents with a break from seasonal allergies. Usually, allergy season will start again in early March and will last until the first hard freeze of winter.
Spring
Spring is one of the worst allergy seasons for Vermont residents, with the plethora of trees producing pollen from early March to late May. Some common tree allergies are caused by oak, birch, maple, hickory, ash, cedar, willow, and mulberry.
Common Allergens
Residents of Vermont can expect trees, weeds, and grass to play a primary role in their seasonal allergy problems. Indoor allergens can also be present year-round and include pet dander, mold, and dust mites.
Common Symptoms
Vermont residents can expect the following allergy symptoms:
Runny nose
Coughing
Congestion
Sneezing
Headaches
Scratchy throat
Itchy eyes
Watery eyes
Hives
Aggravated asthma symptoms
The most important thing to remember is these symptoms can mimic COVID, so include a COVID test if you see these symptoms to rule that out first. Happy Spring!
Sunscreen Season
With our nice weather comes a stronger sun. Please apply sunscreen to you child before coming to school. Also have weather appropriate clothing as a spare at school.

SPARK Enrichment After School Session 5
We are excited to offer your child an opportunity to participate in Spark Enrichment, an after-school applied learning program for students in grades 5-8. Sessions will run for 5 weeks from 2:50 p.m - 4:20 p.m. with our 5th session starting April 20th and end May 25th. These small group classes will be facilitated by school faculty and staff. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that can be found on the link below. Caregivers will receive an email (using the email given on the form) informing them of the assigned workshop on Monday or Tuesday of the week that workshops begin. In order to take full advantage of this learning opportunity, students will need to make a commitment to attend all five Thursdays. If your child decides to not take part in this session after having registered please contact Julie Rogers so that others may fill the spot. The after-school activity bus will provide transportation home for students in need of a ride home.
The dates of the session are: April 20, May 4, 11, 18 and 25. When registering, students will be able to rank their choices for better placement! Students will be placed on a first come first serve basis as well as ensuring that students do not repeat workshops unless there are open spots. Please use this registration form and a listing of workshop descriptions. Contact Julie Rogers (jrogers@cvsdvt.org) with any questions.
Please mark your calendars. Spring Art Show season is here!
