March 24, 2017
It is with great pride that I celebrate with our kindergarten and first grade students the success of their Student Led Conferences!! As I conferenced with one young Mustang, he so confidently shared his pride in the growth of his math skills and physical fitness. This is what Student Led Conferences are about...the student, the student's confidence, the student's growth of presentation skills, and the student's understanding of how he or she is growing as a learner. What a celebration!
In sharing this pride we have received feedback asking about details of specific percentiles and wanting a teacher's voice. Please note that these conferences are not for this purpose. You need to contact your child's teacher for details of this nature as that is a Parent/Teacher Conference.
Again, our Student Led Conferences are designed around the student for the student to articulate his or her understanding of growth which will look and sound very different for each child. Please use the "questions" at each conference table to help guide discussion. Also, note this is a time to celebrate what the student sees as growth or pride and not a time to share disappointment. We are growing their presentation skills for various audiences as well as developing recognition and ownership of data.
Again, thank you for setting aside time to join your student for this conference as 100% of our students will present. If you are not able to do so, please know that we are making sure there is an adult available for each child.
Thank you to our kindergartners and first graders for their courage in kicking off our very first school-wide Student Led Conferences!!
Enjoy the weekend and weather along with a good book--read, read, read!

If you or a family member are unable to attend, all administrators and available Midway staff are attending to be sure that each student has a guest. Please understand that we are doing this school-wide and during the day so that 100% of our children can lead a data conversation about their learning and share their success. We understand if you are not able to make it on the assigned days but please know we can not reschedule. We do want you to hear from your child about the learning. You can talk with your child about their goals and accomplishments at home and celebrate their learning together.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you!

Please sign up to volunteer for Field Day! We need your help!
We're getting ready for The REAL Superhero Field Day Friday, April 07th
Morning Shift Field Day from 8:30 am to 11:00 am
Afternoon Shift Field Day from from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
This year our Field Day will be about our Real Super Heroes.....our teachers. They work hard every school day and then bring their work home with them. Our Super Heroes are planning their lessons, reaching and teaching, and keeping our school safe.
Our Real Super Hero Field Day will be an all day event from 9-1:30. We will have many stations for our students to participate in but we also need volunteers to assist us. We will have over 35 stations and we need lots of volunteers to run the stations. Having adults at stations makes the station run smoothly and allows our kids to have a safe time playing. We have two volunteer times, one is 8:30 -11 and 11:00 - 1:30. Please help our children have a fantastic time before Spring Break.
Thank you,
Laura Gates

Keys to Friendship program for our Character Club members
Character Club members had the opportunity to learn about various physical, auditory, visual and learning differences. Students learned how they can show compassion to others that may have those differences. A big thank you to all the adult volunteers that made this experience possible for our students.

Students from Mrs. Sugg's 4th grade class trying to solve the critical thinking challenges
Parents and visitors are invited to use their smart phones to participate in our QR Code Scavenger Hunts. Parents and visitors should make sure they have a QR reader app such as "Quick Scan" or "Qrafter" installed on their smart phone or tablet. Enjoy!
More TypingQuest Progress
Our MES students continue to improve their keyboarding skills using the TypingQuest program. In addition to 5th graders Tanner Larsen, Brooks Orr, and Owen McLane, 3rd graders Jesse Carlisle and Aubrey Lamberth are keyboarding 32 words per minute with 90% accuracy based on typing assessments they have taken in TypingQuest. There are many students in grades 3, 4, and 5 who are close to these scores. Students receive a gold punch card once they are able to type 32 WPM with 90% accuracy.
Teachers sign up for lab time when their student can practice their keyboarding skills with the TypingQuest program but students can also practice at home by going to this webaddress: https://goo.gl/Z6QitR or scanning this QR code with a QR Reader.
