Number Talks Workshop (Grades K-5)

Workshop Description & Overview
AUDIENCE: Kingergarten through fifth grade teachers, math coaches, curriculum directors, and administrators. This session has been specifically designed to meet the needs of educators in grades K-5
Overview: Whether you have tried Number Talks before, or are new to Number Talks completely, this session will help you learn how to make Number Talks a vibrant and essential part of your everyday classroom practice. By doing so, you will increase your student's number sense, fluency and confidence in math class!
During this workshop, Bob Batty, MRESC Math Content Specialist & Curriculum Director will highlight strategies and tools that will help K-5 teachers:
~Understand the key components of number talks, and how to establish essential procedures and expectations for their implementation.
-Understand the goals of number talks in grades K-5, AND learn how to effectively utilize various models and tools to anchor student strategies to learning goals.
~Use number talks to provide both: (1) support for struggling learners; and (2) challenges to your highest achievers.
~Teachers will have the opportunity to collaborate with peers to develop their own number talk.
~Teachers will have a chance to participate in an optional follow up book study to reinforce the ideas presented during the day. Graduate credit will be available for the book study.
Using number talks will help you create learning environments that embody the Standards for Mathematical Practice!

$0 - No Cost to Curriculum Team Districts: Districts purchasing presenter contract (i.e. Curriculum Team Districts) may attend at no cost.
- The following is a list of "Curriculum Team" districts for the 2019-2020 school year: Ada, Botkins, Fairlawn, Hardin-Houston, Jackson Center, Riverside, Upper Scioto Valley, Ridgemont, Kenton City Schools, and Sidney City Schools.
$75 for districts not listed above from Hardin, Shelby, or Logan counties, Boards of DD, and Career Centers.
$125 for school districts outside of the above counties or other agencies/non-profits.

Meet our Presenter
Background: Bob is excited to be joining the curriculum team at the Midwest Regional ESC. He taught for 18 years in a high school math classroom and has three years of experience as math curriculum specialist. Bob is an active member of the Dayton Area Math Teachers Circle, The ODE network of regional Leaders, and the Ohio Council of Teachers of mathematics where he currently serves as the nominations committee chair.
Bob earned his bachelor’s in math education from Miami University. He later earned a master’s of arts in teaching mathematics from the University of Cincinnati and finished his principals licensure at Indiana Wesleyan University. He and his family reside in the Versailles area.
ATTENTION TO DETAILS - IMPORTANT INFORMATION
What time should I arrive at the training site? Please arrive 15 minutes early to each session to complete the check-in process. Please enter through the main entrance and check-in with the Office before proceeding to the second floor multi-purpose room.
Food & Beverage: Bottled water and assorted breakfast bars will be available at the beginning of the session. While coffee or other food will not be served, participants are free to bring snack items for themselves or to share with the group. Please plan accordingly…..
What You Should Bring? Participants should bring a laptop, note taking materials, and writing utensils with them to the session.
Our Cancellation Policy - Cancellations must be received 15 days prior to the event. Cancellations received outside of this policy will not be accepted. Attendees and/or employing districts will be billed accordingly.
