For Week 14

It was so good to be back with all of you today!! My kids were ready to come back.

I hope your kids enjoyed Giotto today! See my notes below on how to replicate this at home.

Continue to trace and draw those maps at home. We are up to 350. We are half way!

Please remember to bring a 6x9 piece of cardboard for Art next week. We will need one mom from each class to take our masterpieces outside to spray paint our tinfoil gold once the kids complete the project. Our artists is Ghiberti.

Community Announcements:

Prayer Requests and Praise Reports

Praises and Thanksgiving!! Gavin's medical team decided to try the cath method again instead of open heart surgery...and it worked!! They placed 7 coils in his heart to correct the fistula. He is vomiting quite a bit now though so prayers that this stops! Thank you for keeping Gavin and his family in your prayers.

Recess Time

First of all I want to thank each of you for overseeing our kids on the playground. As temps get colder I know that we will be indoors more. Your children are welcome to play in the nursery room (supervised by a parent) we just ask that you clean up after them, as the nursery workers have already cleaned up the room. If possible, let's keep everyone out of the classrooms during recess time. By this time the tutors have already cleaned their rooms for the day.

Any games or ideas for indoor recess are appreciated! I know it can get a little loud but if we have planned activities for the kids, it should reduce some of the chaos. If you have recess duty and we are going to be indoors, please come with some activities planned or games. I will also try to keep some board games in the supply closet.

Fundraising Luncheon

We will be having another Fundraising Luncheon on Tuesday, January 19th. We are going to have baked potatoes and nachos with cheese sauce. The suggested donation will be very close to what we have done the last two times. Remember all of the donations go towards our Pizza Party for our maps. We have reached 350 maps now! Whoo Hoo we are half way there. Encourage your children to try to do at least a map or two a week. Jackson says he wants to do 13 a week. He must really want pizza!

Mom's Night Out Thursday January, 28th

I have asked Christa Bartlett, Challenge Director at South Tulsa Campus to come speak to us. Christa is a homeschool mom of nearly 10 years. She is homeschooling her three boys who are in Foundations/Essentials and one in Challenge. I asked her to speak because she has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to homeschooling and she knows where we are headed. She has also had her ups and downs. I will let her share her story but know that she has had some significant challenges. Yet, she knows that her and her husband are called to homeschool. I hope this is an encouraging evening for you. Feel free to bring your questions about CC and/or homeschooling in general. This is a time for you to relax and be real about where you are in your homeschool journey.

We will meet at from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at my house. Feel free to bring your favorite appetizer or dessert.

Open Houses and Informational Meetings

The second semester is upon us and that means it is time for Open Houses and Informational Meetings. What better time to invite your friends to come and see what you have been talking about.

Our first Open House is Tuesday, January 26 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. We will have an Information Meeting from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. I highly encourage visitors to stay for the Information Meeting so they can understand the "why" behind what they observe that morning. If they just attend the Open House and do not go to an Information Meeting then they may not understand the philosophy of Classical Education and Classical Conversations. So if you invite friends and family to attend an Open House please stay with them for the Informational Meeting. They are more likely to stay if you do! Also let them know they can bring lunch and eat with us that day.

Children are welcome at the Open House! I will have enough art and science supplies ready. If you have friends that are planning to attend the Open House please let me know how many children to prepare for. I don't want to run out of Art Supplies for them.

Additional Meetings in January:

Information Meeting - January 18th 7:00 to 9:00 pm Panera Bread off 145th and Aspen

Information Meeting - Saturday, January 30th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am Panera Bread off 145th and Aspen. Please RSVP so I can prepare adequately.

How to make tempera paint.

I encourage each of you to go make egg tempera paint at home with your kids this week. We used sidewalk chalk but you can also uses spices in your pantry. You can try cocoa powder, turmeric, paprika and other spices. If you decide to use sidewalk chalk I suggest crushing up smaller pieces of chalk. I broke the chalk into small pieces, placed it in a ziploc bag and used a rolling pin to crush it.

Take one egg yolk and beat well. Mix in 2 tsp of water. Add 1/4 tsp chalk or other medium to a cup. Add 1/2 to 1 tsp of egg mixture to the cup and mix. I did not use organic eggs today but I have read that organic egg yolks make a difference.

Week 13 Lesson Plans

Our tutors have uploaded their weekly lessons plans to a google doc to assist you at home. One or two things may be different but most of the information should be the same that was presented in class. I hope you find this helpful.

Online Extras

I highly recommend the book Classical Christian Education Made Approachable. This is a short and easy read for a friend that is thinking about classical education and classical conversations. It is one of the first books I read when I started looking at Classical Conversations.
