POLYFEST, 2022
Last Friday, October 28, our kura takawaenga hosted the annual Wellington Intermediate Schools’ Polyfest event at the Trust House stadium. This was a huge undertaking with 11 other intermediate groups from Horowhenua, Lower Hutt and Wellington arriving en masse from 9.30 am to perform a range of Pasifika items. The day could not have run more smoothly, due to the contributions from the following individuals and groups:
Olivia Geange who has worked tirelessly on preparing for this day since 2020 and spent countless hours liaising with the schools and many other organisations.
Trudy Sears from Wairarapa REAP who accessed funding from Trust House in order for us to hold the Polyfest at Trust House stadium and was invaluable with many jobs on the big day.
Toby Mills from Noise Productions, who set up the awesome lighting & sound systems. Toby also enabled the Polyfest event to be live streamed via Facebook and Wairarapa TV which was appreciated by many viewers.
Georgina Lologa, who did a fantastic job as our MC, adding a lot of fun through her kōrero and kanikani moves.
Luther Toloa and the Pasifika o Wairarapa Trust for their valuable advice and support.
Reverend Meki Lauvi who led us in prayer to open the day.
Laurence Titter for his mahi in making sure that our venue was safe and secure for all attending.
The Sabutu whānau for loaning us their beautiful tapa cloths to decorate our stage area.
Carterton Events Centre for provide a huge stage area for all performing groups to spread out on.
The families of our 90 MIS performers who all provided delicious plates of kai to feed all groups on the day.
Judy Dreadon, our cooking kaiako, who prepared 300 plates of butter chicken & rice.
The Warehouse for their huge donation of water bottles, plates, knives, forks, tomato sauce and mustard.
New World for their donation of water bottles.
Solway Butchery for providing 1 000 sausages
Breadcraft for providing 1 000 bread rolls
Garden Barn for the loan of plants to decorate the front of stage area.
Our 34 MIS student helpers who performed a variety of supporting roles such as hosts for visiting schools, assisting with food preparation, serving and clearing of tables.
All whānau who gave up their time to come along and support their tamariki during the performances.
The Polyfest event was an outstanding example of our school whakatauki in action - E mātahi ana, e mataara!
Nei āku mihi maioha ki a tātou katoa.

Aquabots
Masterton Intermediate Aquabots teams had the opportunity to attend a special outreach event offered by Victoria University. Their Marine biology professor and 5 students came through, picked up the students and took them to the town pool and stadium complex where they were able to see the equipment used by marine biologists when working.
They had an opportunity to experience hands-on activities such as fish measuring and counting and used VR headsets to get an idea of what the marine biologists experience when underwater. They also were able to use their ROVs, Remotely Operated Vehicles, or underwater robots. This was a fabulous extension to their own Aquabot builds and it leads really well into our Aquabots competition coming up at the beginning of November.
The students were able to see some of the careers possible in the world of marine biology and they had a great time. In the photos you will see a smaller ROV which costs $5000 and a larger one which costs $150,000 - so it was a wonderful chance to have a play with such expensive equipment.

Wellbeing tips
MIS Wellbeing Model
At MIS we have come to an exciting time in our wellbeing journey. After researching a variety of models, attending professional development, building a wellbeing team, gaining feedback from students, teachers and whānau, we will be using the Te Whare Tapa Whā model.
We believe Te Whare Tapa Whā best aligns with our school values and culture, the aspirations of students, whānau and staff, including relationships and connections, and feeling happy and safe.
This model was developed by leading Māori health advocate Sir Mason Durie. The model describes health and wellbeing as a wharenui/meeting house with four walls. These walls represent taha wairua/spiritual wellbeing, taha hinengaro/mental and emotional wellbeing, taha tinana/physical wellbeing and taha whānau/family and social wellbeing. Our connection with the whenua/land forms the foundation.
When all these things are in balance, we thrive. When one or more of these is out of balance our wellbeing is impacted.
In the coming months we will be embedding this model throughout our school, to build a strong sense of wellbeing in our day to day life. This includes strengthening our own understanding, making connections to our school values, acknowledging and incorporating Te Whare Tapa Whā in our classrooms, curriculum areas and making it a part of our school.
E nga kaitiaki o te kura taka waenga o Whakaoriori, nau mai haere mai!
Introducing two more of our board members....
My name is Sarah Booth and I am a primary school teacher which I’m passionate about. I’ve taught in Christchurch, the International School in Suva, Fiji, now I’m back teaching in my hometown. Education is certainly a great interest of mine so being on the board of trustees is a great privilege.
I’m lucky enough to live rurally with my husband and three children. We love to spend time at Castlepoint all year round.
We have a small business in the beekeeping industry which the whole family is involved in.
Weekends are also spend watching school sports which I love.
Kia ora, my name is Judy Dreadon and I am born and bred in the Central Hawkes Bay. I attended St Matthews during my teenage years so being able to return to the Wairarapa 5 years ago was a bonus especially as it enabled me to be closer to my 3 grandchildren or g’s as I call them.
I am a proud member of the MIS whānau and am very excited about my new role this year. I will have the privilege of teaching our MIS students cooking skills which will enable them to cook at home and also I hope to ignite a passion in our students for life long experimenting in the world of food.
I am also looking forward to incorporating our school vege garden into our lessons. My other interests in the sporting world are scoring for the softball and baseball teams and coaching netball. Personally I like to swim and do the odd walk to keep me fit.
