The oldest trading post
History of the fort
Fort Vermillion was located on the shores of the peace river. It was established in 1788 and is said to be the oldest fort created. It was taken over by the Hudsons bay company in 1821 and was a main fur trade post by 1830.
The site of the original post has been moved 5 miles up stream, but most of the buildings have been moved to the new site. The new site is a hamlet with a small community, the main attraction is the historic buildings.
Visitors can go to the heritage area and check out the historic buildings. People should be cautious when examining the historic sites, because the state of these sites are delicate and easily broken.
