Happy Mother's Day
Reading Workshop
This week, we’ll find out how one act of kindness leads to another in the folktale, Half-Chicken. We will also learn about acts of kindness in the traditional tale, The Lion and the Mouse. These selections will be a springboard for discussing the question, “How can one event in a story be the cause of another?”
Target Vocabulary: tumbling, flung, tangled, empty, peacefully, stream, blazed, swift
Phonics Skills: Prefixes re-, un-, over-, pre-, mis-, and silent consonants
Vocabulary Strategy: Antonyms
Comprehension Skill: Cause and effect – tell how one event makes another happen
Comprehension Strategy: Visualize – picture what is happening as you read
Writing Workshop
The students will look through through handwriting books and as a class, we will discuss the many lines and curves needed to properly write letters. They will have an opportunity to complete any pages that may have been missed due to absences or other school commitments. Their completed books will be sent home on Friday. Over the next couple of weeks, during Handwriting, the boys and girls will be introduced to some cursive writing.
Last week, the students needed extra time to finish their special Mother's Day poem. So this week, the second graders will jump right into drawing on what they know to rehearse and plan an informational book. The will choose a topic (action) they are familiar with to write about. This week, they will focus on ways to rehearse for an information book by organizing across their fingers, sketching, and teacher others.
Science
Here’s something you can do to encourage your child’s curiosity: Help them look for signs of erosion on a small scale in the neighborhood. Gutters and ditches are great places to find examples of tiny canyons that have been carved out by water. Go for an "erosion" walk after it rains. Any place where there is soil or sand is a good place to look.
