Collins' Corner

September 22, 2014

Important Dates

September 30 - Field Trip to Lexington County Museum

October 1 - Fun Fitness

October 8 - Early Release Day

October 13 - Professional Development Day (no school for students)

Please note...

  • This year we do not have a day set aside for parent conferences, so I would like to begin scheduling parent conferences as soon as possible. Please go to https://kcollins.youcanbook.me/ and book a conference time at your earliest convenience. I would like to get all of these conference done by the end of October. Please note that I have limited conference times to 15 minutes. Please adhere to this time frame. With 23 students, it is very hard to get all of these conferences scheduled. Thank you for your understanding.
  • A Scholastic order form should have been in your child's yellow folder last Monday. If you are interested in ordering any books, please return the order by Friday, September 26th.
  • Children's author, Phil Bildner, will be visiting LMES the afternoon of October 30th. Pre-sales of his books are due by October 2nd.

Language Arts

The spelling pattern we will be studying this week are the vowel digraphs /oa/ as in boat, and /ea/ as in teach. We have talked about the long e and long o sound that these digraphs make. We have also discussed "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking," to help them remember these patterns.

This week we will continue talking about fix up strategies (what to do when you come to a word you don't know), and we will be discussing characters, setting, problem and solution when reading a story. We will also begin reading fables and determine the moral.

In writing, we are writing scripts for a newscast that we will film on Wednesday discussing urban, suburban and rural settings. We are also reviewing rules for capitalization and how to write a complete sentence.

Math

We will take the Chapter 1 math test tomorrow. A review sheet should be in your child's yellow folder for homework tonight. Please note that there is also a vocabulary test. I have also sent home vocabulary cards to use for studying these vocabulary words.

Our first addition fact quiz will be this Thursday. All students will take 0s and 1s this week. Please help your child prepare for addition fact quizzes in the coming weeks. Quizzes will be given on Thursdays. Students will be given 2 minutes to complete each quiz. If a student misses more than two facts, they will retake the same fact test the following Thursday. As students master each quiz, they will then move to the next group of facts. There are flash cards on our classroom website if you would like to print them out. They can also make their own flash cards at home. Fact fluency is very important as we begin adding and subtracting two digit numbers with and without regrouping this year. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Social Studies

Community project presentations went very well! I will return the projects later this week. We have kept them here at school so that students can enjoy reading each other's projects.

This week we will review the directions on a compass rose and will begin reading maps.
