North Carolina Relief Map Project
What Will We Be Learning This Week?
The Leader in Me
This week we will be focusing on Habit 6: Synergize. Students will learn how to recognize and value the differences that we all bring to a class and learn how to turn these differences into positives. We will learn how to work together to create an outcome that that is greater than what would be possible if the work were done alone.
Math
We have completed Unit 1 and will begin Unit 3 next week. Unit 3 topics include: Understanding Equality, Addition and Subtraction Change Problems, Collection Problems and Two-Step Problems Using Addition and Subtraction.
Accelerated Math – Most students are doing well with Accelerated Math. Be aware that students will have only 4 days next week to master objectives. Also, if your child is online with AM, please be sure he/she has a charged device daily.
Science
Students are very interested in their research of natural disasters. We talked today about Hurricane Joaquin and how we are likely to feel some of its effects with rain and wind. You may find that your child is interested in its track as it approaches the East Coast.
Next week, students will be working in small groups to organize the information researched this week. Students will present the information on posters later in the week.
Language Arts
We will take the spelling test for last week's words on Tuesday. There will not be a new list this week.
Social Studies
Relief Map Project:
The due date for our relief map project is Friday, October 9. Here is the info that I sent home on this project a few weeks back for your reference. Please see me if you have any questions:
In addition to our usual classwork, students will be given the opportunity to complete an enrichment project at home for extra credit by creating a relief map of North Carolina that shows its three regions and major landforms. Students who wish to complete this project will need to turn it in by Friday, October 9. Students who complete this project will be given a 5 point bump in their social studies grade for the first quarter, up to 100% for the overall grade for the quarter. Students who choose not to do this project will not be penalized in any way as it is an extra credit project for students who would like further enrichment in social studies.

Odds & Ends
Mr. Ross' Class Website
Right now my website is mostly links and information from last year's class, but I will be updating it weekly to include what we are doing this year. Perhaps the most useful feature for parents is that my site includes the Google Slides presentation from which the students copy down their homework each morning (both from me and Ms. Ellis). Since this is updated in real time, you can always check what your child's homework is from home.
Scholastic Book Orders
A Note From Mr. Ross:
Blackburn Blast
Our Blackburn Blast will take place on Friday, October 23rd. We hope to see you there!!
We will be running a fun game for kids to play called Baby Rattle Shake. If you could possibly help us by volunteering to run this or if you could donate cupcakes or candy for the event, please click the link below to sign up. Thank you!
Halloween
Students will be allowed to dress for Halloween on Friday, October 30th if they would like. Here are my requirements for costumes:
1. They must come to school dressed in their costume already. Hairspray, makeup, etc should all be taken care of before they enter the school building.
2. Costumes may not have parts that interfere with learning. This means no masks or costumes that restrict movement or vision, cause problems on the bus with sitting or visibility for the driver, prevent sitting at desks, or prevent participation in PE. They must not obstruct movement in the hallways. Students must wear shoes and show not wear a mask.
3. Costumes may not be violent or suggestive. They should not be insulting to a particular ethnicity, religion, or gender.
4. Costumes may not promote violence or have accessories or props that could be used as a weapon.
5. Faculty and staff can use their discretion in modifying costumes or having students change if they feel a particular costume is a distraction to learning or in violation of our Code of Conduct.
