District 15 Math Committee
In aligning our math program to the district mission and vision, we have begun the rigorous and thoughtful process of reviewing all aspects of it.
To reduce the achievement gap in math, build the capacity of our teachers and maximize the potential of all students, a team of 35 district administrators and staff from our elementary and junior high schools has been meeting over the past two months.
The focus of this work is to assure that our math course offerings from K-8th grade provide equity, access and opportunity for all students to complete Algebra 1 prior to leaving D15.
Work began with a review of the district’s strategic plan and mission, and then research practices at surrounding districts. The outcomes from this work will be to:
Review & revise the K-8 course sequence
Subcommittee work to update the scope & sequence of course offerings
Evaluate & revise placement criteria to include multiple data points
Restructure & revise how we provide enrichment to all students in line with the professional learning series
Provide enrichment materials and supports for staff
Plan for ongoing professional learning to support math workshop and flexible grouping K-8
Revisions for the 2020-2021 school year will be released before the end of the April and will include:
Math block workshop structure
Math workshop instructional supports
Vertically articulated standard maps
Revisions for the 2021-2022 school year will include:
Revised course offerings and sequence
Revised placement process
EnVision and Illustrative Math will continue to be the instructional resources for our math program.
This is still a “work in progress” and as formal decisions have been made staff will be updated. If you are interested in participating in a sub-committee to work on grade level standards and revising the scope and sequence, please reach out to Risa Cohen, District Curriculum Coordinator.

D15/211 Speech Festival
The D15/D211 Annual Speech Fest is coming!
Date: Saturday, April 25, 2020
Location: William Fremd High School
Time: Approximately 9 a.m. - Noon (actual time a student needs to be at the event is about a half hour)
Your students love this event and need mentors!
What does a mentor do?
Helps student choose a piece to perform
Meets with student approximately once per week for about 20-30 minutes to practice
Provide encouragement for student to build confidence
Mentor attendance at the speech event is not required, but the kids love it when their mentor attends.
If you are interested in mentoring a student, please check with your building administrators.
This is a great event for students to improve their public speaking skills, but more importantly, we want the students to have FUN!
D15 Standout Staff: Katie Dengler
Katie is an Instructional Coach at Virginia Lake Elementary School and was nominated by Allison Hudson, Irene Salman and Susan Major.
"Katie is an integral staff member of Virginia Lake. She has not only encouraged several staff members to pursue their National Boards, but has mentored them through the strenuous process with an encouraging smile! Her laugh is infectious and her cheery attitude brings such a joy to VL. She adorns our hallways with powerful messages (and amazing handwriting). Every morning, Katie can be found walking the halls and greeting many of our 680 students by name. She has helped roll out FPC in grades K-3 and has lead informative & engaging PDs. She also serves on the SIP team and has developed language and rubrics to support teachers as they focus on SIP learning goals. She meets with grade level teams to ensure understanding of learning targets and set team goals. Katie is safe, supportive, organized, creative and knowledgeable. We are so thankful that Katie is not only our instructional coach, but a supportive friend to many." -Allison Hudson, Irene Salman and Susan Major.
Congratulations, Katie!
