Digging into Academic Mindsets
An important part of the Blake School Improvement Plan is the Equity/Cultural Awareness component. In that component, we assert that, "teachers will implement equity strategies and practices that foster a community of learners." In order to build a community of learners, we need to have learning partnerships with our students. "The goal of the learning partnership is to help students become more actively engaged in their own learning...The first step in helping them take greater ownership rests in giving them feedback and space for reflection...To get dependent learners to act on feedback or to be strategic, they have to first believe in themselves as learners" (106 - 108).
"Academic mindset is the result of four conceptual and identity frames all braided together by our older limbic brain to create this thing we call mindset" (109-110).
