The Franklin Press
Principal's Update - April/May 2018
Season Changes at BF
Our Kindergarteners are busy planting flowers, watching chicks hatch, and budding into little readers and writers. First graders are planting seeds, spending time at the stream, and keeping data on what they discover. Second graders have established strong learning roots and are beginning to truly shine in their learning. Third graders are realizing their days as BF students are growing shorter and are cherishing their time with our teachers and each other.
With spring comes also changes in season at Ben Franklin. At the end of this school year, I will be leaving Ben Franklin to pursue several other opportunities to work with children. I have thoroughly enjoyed my days here at Ben Franklin and will cherish the many memories my time here has provided. The district will begin the search for the new BF principal soon, and I look forward to working with him/her to provide for a smooth transition. Again, many thanks for welcoming me into your community these past years.

2018-2019 Placement Process
As the end of this school year approaches, plans for classroom placements are being made. Mr. Meurer will work closely with teachers, guidance, and other staff to place all of our incoming Kindergarten through second grade students into the next grade. LIS places students entering fourth grade.
All students will be placed in heterogeneous classes with the best possible teacher match and a few familiar faces from previous classes. Any specific academic needs will be taken into consideration first.
Parents/Guardians of current Ben Franklin students are welcome to share any vital information with Mr. Meurer that the school does not already have. This information must be in writing and may not include requests for specific teachers. Please note that pertinent information shared in previous years must be resubmitted. For students who will be at LIS next year, Mr. Meurer will communicate any letters/emails with LIS when they begin their placement process.
Letters or emails must be received by June 20, 2017. If emailing, please email Mr. Meurer at wmeurer@ltps.org and put the phrase “2018-2019 Placement” in the subject line.
Please trust us to make the best placement possible for all children. It is important to us that students have successful academic and developmentally appropriate experiences in school with talented and caring teachers.
Final placement information will be available in late August.
Donate Shoes and Sneakers for a Good Cause
Now through the end of the month, send in any footwear you would like to donate. BF will donate all footwear to the nonprofit Soles4Souls which donates shoes to people in need around the world.
NO footwear is too old, too beaten up, too torn - if a set of shoes is worn, torn, or old, the material can be recycled and reused. So send those shoes, sneakers, and more in before the end of the month.
Gifted and Talented Screening Process
All K-7 students are screened for eligibility to receive gifted and talented services during the 2018-2019 school year. We recognize that parents/guardians possess valuable information about the learning characteristics of their children.
Parent Input forms for G&T are currently available in each building and at www.ltps.org. Go to Admin, Office of Instructional Services, Special Programs, Gifted and Talented. Scroll down and click on Parent Inventory Form.
Parent/Guardian forms must be received by May 1st, 2018
Please contact Mrs. Muzi, K-3 Elementary Enrichment Specialist/GT Teacher, at jmuzi@ltps.org, if you have any additional questions.
