Panther News
Some of our 3rd and 5th grade students will be participating in the Milestones retest from Wednesday - Friday. We plan to house all students on the ends of the 1st grade hallway, 2nd grade hallway, art, and music room.
In your mailboxes you will find two copies of your report cards. The fancier paper is the copy that goes home to parents and students on the last day of school. The other copy (regular copy paper) is the copy that should be filed in their permanent records.
We plan to receive the 145 chromebooks back from the high school on Monday, and we will use these for the Milestones retests. Any laptops and chargers you have in your room, please turn into the lower Science Lab on Thursday. There will be signs on where to place certain laptops and chargers and a sign off sheet for you to initial.

Enjoy your weekend,

GaDOE’s Summer Reading Program
To ensure students and families have the support they need to make literacy a priority this summer, the Georgia Department of Education is working to get books in the hands of as many students as possible, through summer reading events, resources, and the donation of more than 100,000 books.
Students can visit summerreading.gadoe.org to log the books they read this summer. We’ll keep track of books read and recognize winning students, schools, and districts.
Georgia’s public libraries also have summer reading programs and activities throughout the summer, and we encourage students to utilize this resource and sign up for a library card. Click here to find your local library.
For those who have access to a digital device, students also have access to more than 10,000 free e-books all summer, thanks to a partnership between myON and Get Georgia Reading. Visit getgeorgiareading.org/myon2016 for directions on how to access these books.
Professional Learning
Reminder: Jackson County Schools Summer Professional Learning -- please register on the JCSS PL webpage.
The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) is partnering with the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) to help teachers learn standards-aligned strategies to make sure students master literacy in all content areas and improve student math achievement. SREB’s no-cost comprehensive professional learning...
Includes six teachers from each school, including two math and four literacy teachers — to start training in the summer of 2016. (Note: the schools with the greatest success have at least one administrator learning along with the early adopters. SREB research shows that teachers absorb the new practices faster and more deeply when school and district leaders are supportive of the work and equally invested in their success.)
Provides supplemental funding to help offset costs for substitute teachers, travel and meals.
Helps schools spread and expand knowledge of these instructional strategies over the next two years to all teachers through ongoing coaching, in-school visits and professional learning communities.
To learn more about the literacy and math instructional professional development. The following webinars will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. Click here to register for the May 24 webinar.

Building a Culture of Writing
This fall, the GaDOE ELA team will launch a six-month literacy series entitled Collaborative Conversations for Building a Culture of Writing. This series will be an interactive online series designed to build teachers’ pedagogical knowledge while cultivating a culture of writing. Teachers in grade K – 5 and 6 – 12 will work through six sessions in which researchers and classroom teachers, together, will share evidence-based writing practices and show what those practices look like in a real classroom. By connecting practice to theory, this series will answer questions about writing instruction, engage teachers in professional growth, impact instructional practices, and ultimately, cultivate a culture of writing. The series begins September 2016 and offers 3 tiers of participation for teachers/schools/districts to customize professional learning to meet their unique needs. If interested, please register here for an Informational Webinar on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 - 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
