Here are some resources from Ms. Shamus, our Social Emotional Counselor:

As we settle into the 2021-2022 school year, NHS continues to support our students’ health and well-being in the same way that we continue to support their academic success. A popular buzz-word frequently connected to social and emotional health is “self-care,” which is loosely defined as “any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our body and mind.” Self-care helps us improve our physical, mental, and emotional health, with several benefits:

  • We are more resilient to life’s stressors when we are feeling our best.

  • When we feel our best, we are better able to help ourselves and our community.

  • When we feel good about ourselves, we can create and maintain healthy connections and supportive relationships. Especially now, as we transition back to in-person learning, re-establishing old connections and creating new ones is vitally important to our students’ well-being.

For more information about what self care is (and what it is not), please see this presentation.

As the year progresses, remember that self-care is not just for students! I encourage families to help one another invest in their well-being by making some time for self-care on a consistent (if not daily) basis. Plenty of ideas to get you started are included below. These ideas include both free and paid resources, as well as activities that can be done individually or as a group.
