OCPS New Teacher Induction
2018 EDITION: Volume 1 October Issue
Monthly New and Beginning Teachers Virtual Support Sessions
OCTOBER TOPIC: Effective Mentoring
Importance of Mentoring
Classrooms change from year to year and come with a different challenge, as teachers we must be able to shift. We must begin to understand our social and emotional competency, as well as the students we teach and how it impacts instruction. With proper support, these challenges can be overcome.
The US Department of Education i3 Validation analysis shows student achievement can be increased through:
- High-quality, trained instructional mentors
- Frequent job-embedded feedback focused on instruction and delivered face-to-face
- Small mentor caseload
- Formative assessment system to guide instruction and student supports
- Consistent data for program improvement
Through effective mentoring, the first doesn't have to be difficult. Based on the OCPS Induction and Mentoring Program we aim to provide multiple layers of support to ensure a successful beginning to your teaching career in Orange County Public Schools. We will explore an intricate component of the exemplary practices, goal setting. During our live virtual sessions, we will discuss in detail the exemplary practics of mentoring.
See below for links to the virtual session and under resources, you will find the exemplary practices for mentoring.

Goal Setting
When teachers get regular practice in identifying and monitoring their personal and academic goals, they have a key advantage. They begin to envision their future “possible selves” — as a person, as a learner, and as someone whose work matters in the larger world. as we strive for success, do this with positive expectations.
Positive Expectations
The expectations of your students will greatly influence their achievement in your class and in their lives. Through goal setting between you and your mentor and with your students, we help each other overcome obstacles and reach our goals and make the classroom the optimal learning environment.
