Mayfield Messenger
Week 32 Edition/March 24, 2023
Message from Dr. Frischkorn
Good Evening Mayfield Intermediate School students and families!
This past week the school administration met with each campus within Mayfield Intermediate School. During the meeting, we focused on our student's success throughout the first three quarters of the school year. Teachers and staff have established great classroom routines and structures, procedures for transitioning from class to class have been set, and expectations for how our students should perform in the classroom have been established. We are so proud of how much growth we have seen in our students academically, socially, and emotionally. To maintain this excellent growth for the last nine weeks, we must follow routines and procedures and meet our high expectations for academic success.
Here are a couple of areas that we did speak with the students about that we need to ensure that we are still keeping academics as our primary focus:
- Bathroom: We have noticed a slight increase in students using the bathroom for socializing. We reminded students to sign out of their rooms to use the bathroom and not go to the bathroom to meet up with their friends.
- Social Media Issues: Many of our students have social media accounts. Many of the peer conflicts that our teachers, school counselors, and administrators need to mediate are due to issues that occur from social media and cell phone use outside of school. The conflict begins outside of school and then comes into the school building. Parents, please ensure that if your child has a cell phone or social media account, you are constantly monitoring their account and interactions with peers. I have two sons who both own cell phones. They don't have social media accounts, and every night they must turn their cell phones off and give them to their mother or me. We review every text they send and monitor when they are on their cell phone. As a parent, it takes time, but ensuring that our kids are using electronics appropriately is very valuable.
- Spring Fever: The longer days and the warmer weather excites everyone about the last couple of months of the school year. With the warmer weather, students still need to ensure they are focused on their academics. Taking 20 minutes every night to read or review materials for one of their upcoming SOL exams is a great way to keep academics focused. Our students are all participating in SOL reviews during Bobcat Block that focuses on 5th-grade science, math, or language arts. Students can review their daily Bobcat notes or take 20 minutes a day to read one of their library books when they are home in the evening.
Thank you to all the families who have worked with us throughout the first three quarters of the school year. I'm predicting excellent growth from all our students when we get the final SOL reports this summer.
Always Learning,

Congratulations to our Mayfield Choir
This past Wednesday our Chorus traveled to Manassas Park Middle School to participate in the District Choral Assessments with schools from the surrounding area. The students did an awesome job at their Choral Assessment on Wednesday! They received a II (Excellent) from each of the judges that watched their performance, as well as a II (Excellent) for sight-reading. Ms. Hellebuyck is so proud of their hard work! We are excited to watch our choir program continue to grow under Ms. Hellebuyck's direction!

Love Your Laptop
Our students have done a great job caring for their laptops throughout the school year. Our 5th-grade students were provided a new Chromebook at the beginning of the year, and our 6th-grade students use the laptops from last year.
One area that we do need to focus on is the few students who are causing intentional damage to their laptops. Missing computer keys from the keyboard and cracked computer screens are the two most common items that are intentionally damaged. We will be reaching out to families and letting them know that they will be charged for any damage to a computer that is deemed intentional by our technology specialist and/or school administration.
Metz Spring Sports Season Begins March 27th
Students interested in participating in middle school sports will need to ensure that they have an up-to-date sports physical on file with the middle school. The opportunity to try out for Metz Middle School sports is available to all our 6th-grade students at Mayfield Intermediate School.
The spring sports that begin on Monday, March 27, are:
- Baseball
- Softball
- Girls Soccer
- Boys Track

Career Day is Coming April 14
Dear Mayfield Family and Community Members,
February 22, 2023
Mayfield Intermediate School will be holding a Career Day for our students on Friday, April 14th. Career Day is a fun-filled day where students will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers. They will meet members of our community and engage in activities designed to increase their awareness of the world of work.
We are currently in need of community members willing to share their careers with us. Our career day will resemble a college fair and all of our speakers will have their own booth used to showcase their career and talents. We ask that you arrive by 11:15 am in order to set up. The fair will begin at 11:30 am and conclude at 1:45 pm. Guest speakers will talk to students about what they do at work, what they like about their job, what type of training/education is needed, and how basic skills/subjects that the children are learning now can help them in this job. Please feel free to bring handouts, props and visual aids (stickers, trinkets, business cards, magnets, etc.). In return, you will receive many smiles and priceless questions.
We hope that you will consider participating in our Career Day activity. If you are available, please fill out the following link: www.tinyurl.com/MISCareerDay2023. The link can also be found on Mayfield’s homepage. Please RSVP no later than March 17th. Questions can be e-mailed to Liz Thomasson at ethomasson@mcpsva.org, or call 571-377-6617. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. We hope that you are able to join us for this special event!
