Writing Workshop Enables Individualized Instruction
Workshop structure provides substantial time for whole group, small group and one-on-one instruction to students daily.Teachers plan strategic curriculum specific to the students in the room, moving students towards appropriate whole-group goals (standards) while simultaneously responding to individual needs. Much like an athletic coach considers, What does this player need to know for this Saturday’s game in order to play the best she can at thisstage of her development, workshop teachers strategically plan what to teach the whole class and what to teach each individual writer to enable him to produce the best text he can in each genre studied throughout the year. In writing workshop, all students can be successful—including the most advanced and most challenged students, two extremes often ill- served by other curriculums that teach to the median.

Library Volunteers
Library volunteers are needed to help with shelving and checking in books in our TCE Library. Volunteering in the library is fun and the schedule is flexible! If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Hopper, TCE Librarian (lhopper@hse.k12.in.us).
*A safe visitor background check is required for all school volunteers. For more information on background checks, visit https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering.

We Are Learning...
Reading
We continued talking about reading nonfiction works and how to tell if the information we are finding in these types of books are relevant or coming from a reliable source. We discussed that when we are researching a topic and writing down a note, it is a good practice to fact check the information we are receiving. If we find the same fact, or very similar fact, in two different sources then we can reasonably assume that we have the correct information. We also learned that when becoming an expert on a topic, you will likely have to read many books across that one topic. Each book will give more information and deepen your understanding!
*Friday afternoon we spent some time listening and learning from Yuyi Morles. Yuyi is an author from Mexico that is participating in this years Global Read Aloud. We got to hear a little about her culture and then she read aloud one of her very own books, Just a Minute!
Writing
This week in writing we worked on adding a few more craft moves into our informational writing. This week will be spent adding any last details and walking our celebration piece through the editing and revision process.
This Friday, all of our works will be on display in our classroom as all of 2nd Grade will be participating in a Gallery Walk through all of our rooms. Students will spend time in each room reading and learning from all of our collective works!
*This week during our writing share time, Libby and Dron shared out the teaching point from our writing conference. I appreciate them sharing their learning with their peers!
Word Study
We finished the week talking about homophones. Homophones are words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Realizing these different words exist and how to spell each will be beneficial when we use them in our writing.
Math
This week in math we continued to work on multiplication. We looked at multiplication by drawing pictures, creating number lines, and even drew arrays to help. Next week we will begin to learn about the algorithm to multiplication. We take this concept so slot so that each student really understands the concept, rather than just memorizing the steps.
This week we also looked various tables and graphs. We will continue to look at data and graphs and think about if there might be a place in our informational writing for them!
