Youth Risk Behavior Survey Presentation on Monday 10/7
The topics covered are heavy ones, ranging from substance use to sex to suicidal ideation. Many of these issues are faced by our children outside of school hours and aren’t topics that the school can mitigate alone. If we want to decrease the risky behavior of our children, we need to partner with parents and be prepared to engage in some difficult conversations.
Regardless of what age your children are, you’ll find something of value in this presentation. You may have teens actively navigating these risk or have children who will become teens in just a matter of years. Some of the results will surprise you, some we can be proud of, and some highlight areas upon which our community needs to focus. Below is a snapshot of some of topics that will be covered and discussed Monday evening:
- Monomoy high school student use of tobacco is well below the state and national averages and continues to decline, but their vaping use has rapidly risen above both state and national averages.
- Monomoy teens’ use of marijuana has increased since 2016 and is above their peers in Massachusetts and the U.S.
- Our high school students’ use of alcohol is below the state and national averages, but we have higher frequencies of teens who binge drink.
- Monomoy student drivers are far less likely than their peers in Massachusetts to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking alcohol but much more likely to text while driving.
- The percentage of our high school students who report having had sexual intercourse in their lifetime has increased by 43% in the past 3 years.
The number of Monomoy teens experiencing unwanted sexual contact has dropped by 30% since 2014, but this still impacts a shocking number of our girls. - Reports of self-harm and suicidal ideation have decreased significantly in the past 5 years, but the number of Monomoy’s teens who report being depressed is up nearly 50% since 2016.
I could not be more proud of our Peer Leaders who have volunteered to not only talk about these heavy topics with their peers but also with our parent community. Monday evening’s forum is a testament to the caliber of student-leadership that Monomoy is producing. Please come listen to our Peer Leaders, engage in a difficult conversation, and partner with our schools to keep our children safer.
See you Monday evening.

SHARK SHOUT OUTS
- Shark Shout Out to Brandon Ryder, Joe Gallante, and Brendan Pawlina for helping me out. I had a standing desk that arrived in a big box marked "some assembly required." The three of them took the time to put it together for me - and for all the students that will benefit from being able to use it. Brandon took it a step further and adjusted the height on another desk to make that one more useful. Thank you! -Mrs. Marcia Flavell
- So thankful for our Java SHORE Cafe for the hot cup o'joe mid day on a Friday! Their cheerful greeting, professional customer service, and bright smiles lit up my afternoon! -Mrs. Janet Ferro

Congratulations to Samuel Chase: Chatham Student of the Month for October
Congratulations to Samuel Chase for being awarded Chatham Student of the month for October. Here is Jen Police's nomination letter.
I would like to nominate Samuel Chase as Rotary’s Student of the Month. During Sam’s five years at Monomoy Regional High School, I had the honor of serving as his guidance counselor, until accepting the role of Assistant Principal last year. It is with great pride that I have witnessed tremendous growth and maturity in Sam as a student, leader, friend, and athlete. Sam is a diligent student whom meets all his deadlines, use his time wisely, and manages the competing responsibilities of being a student athlete. Each day I witness Sam using both his AP Seminar and Jawsome hour responsibly. This year Sam has taken on a new role as a Peer Leader and has exemplified skills of an incredible role model. His approach to school has not gone unnoticed and he should be acknowledged for his efforts.
In the photo below, Sam Chase receives the Student of the Month award from Rotarian Gail Eldredge.
AP Government & Politics class visits Barnstable Superior Court
On Wednesday October 2 the MRHS AP Government & Politics class was invited to by Judge Robert Rufo (of Harwich) to visit Barnstable Superior Court. The court was being visited by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to hear 4 appeals cases. The class was treated to a spirited display of how our legal system works when a case is appealed to the state supreme court. Students also learned a valuable lesson on how to prepare for cases such as these. A hearty thank you to Judge Rufo for this wonderful opportunity!
The visit was chronicled in the following CC Times article here:

Friends of Pleasant Bay Field Trip - Poems, Prose, and Photos
Many thanks to the Friends of Pleasant Bay organization for their generous grant to the MRHS Creative Writing class and our writing club, Sandscript. Their grant allowed our students to spend an hour at Pleasant Bay, writing poems, composing prose pieces, and taking photos. The writing and photos will be published (thanks to the grant) in a booklet that celebrates the Bay. Look for it soon in our school libraries, town libraries, and town halls. Thank you again, Friends of Pleasant Bay!!

Monomoy Parents are invited to attend a very special presentation of Monomoy’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey results, Monday evening, October 7th at 6:30pm in the high school auditorium. Our district is unique on Cape Cod, in that every two years our students take this survey and we very publicly share the results with our school community. Our high school Peer Leaders will be making a presentation of the results to our high school students during the school day on Monday and then presenting to parents and community members Monday evening. At the end of their presentation, our Peer Leaders will be part of a panel discussion with school and public safety officials on how we can better protect our children from some of concerns identified within the survey.

Credit for Life Fair - 12th Grade
LOCATION: MRHS Gym
On Thursday October 10 from 8:45-11:00 we will once again be hosting the Credit for Life Fair here at the MRHS Gym. The fair is an interactive simulation that requires our senior students to select a career option and practice managing their personal budgets based upon the projected monthly income of their job choice. Students will visit booths staffed by Cape Cod Five employees and other members of the community as they make financial decisions about what they want, what they need and what they can afford. The Credit for Life Fair was designed to help students gain an understanding of the financial decisions they will have to make when they are on their own, without parents or guardians paying the bills and covering costs of food, clothing, shelter and entertainment.

Athletics Weekly Summary
Written by: Emma Santoni
This week Friday was made for Field Hockey. A first half goal by Caroline DiGiovanni is all the Offense needed to beat Barnstable. The defense, along with goalie Caitlin Bouvier who had 5 saves, played well to the very end where they stopped three penalty corners. Amy Hinesley gained possession after the last corner to end the game in a victory. The Lady Sharks were back at it on Monday vs Martha’s Vineyard. Caroline DiGiovanni had a goal and two assists, Holly Evans had a goal and an assist and Jane Howard scored a goal to lead the Sharks to a 3-0 victory. Wednesday, Field Hockey travelled to Sandwich to face the only team that has beat them and the only team left on the Cape that is undefeated. Monomoy lost 4-1 with Caroline DiGiovanni scoring for the Sharks. They fought hard through the rainy weather. Monomoy is the only team that has scored on Sandwich and they have scored in both games vs Sandwich.
Tuesday started the week of play for the Boys soccer team as they travelled to play St John Paul, where their strong offense beat St John Paul 4-1. AJ Williams got the Sharks on the scoreboard with Sam Chase, Troy Olson and Sam Higgins adding to the final score. Strong defensive play by goalie Sean Deveau with 7 saves and defenders Wes Ulrich, Ryan Meehan and Trey Cox kept the Lions to just one goal. Thursday Monomoy faced Sandwich on our home turf. The boys lost 3-1. A.J. Williams scores the goal for the Sharks, off an assist by Troy Olson.
Girls soccers started their week off with a tie vs St John Paul at home. Grace Ventura tied the game with the Lady Sharks goal midway through the first half. Strong defense on both sides kept the score tied through the remainder of the game. Thursday girls soccer travelled to Sandwich to face the Lady Knights and lost a close 2-1 game. It was a close game with Michaela Crossen scoring the goal. Josie Ganshaw was strong in goal with 14 saves.
Tuesday Cross Country had a tri meet vs Sturgis East. Boys Top runners where Ryder Robbins and Steven Young. The Dery sister Courtney and Margo took the top for the girls team!
On Tuesday Golf beat Sturgis West with their strongest performance 105-93 this year at Eastward Ho. Jason Metters and Grady Howell led the way with scores of 27 and 25. Thursday Golf faced Nantucket
Shout out to Monomoy Alumni, Emma Mawn for getting a hat trick, and Noah Tambolleo for scoring a goal.
