Background Information
Scientific Name: Perca
Habitat: any bodies of water
Predators: Larger fish, bullfrogs, and turtles.
Prey: Small fish, crayfish, snails, and worms.
Niche: Regulates the number of small fish.
Adaptations: The perch has many different fins that help it propel through water, keep them from rolling, and helps them steer and halt.
Objective
In this lab, each student will work with a lab group in order to learn from the dissection of a Perch. Dissection gives the student the opportunity to observe the placement of organs and their relationships to one another.
Circulatory System
The circulatory system of a perch is a low pressure, single loop system. There is one direction of blood flow from the heart, which acts as a pump.
Organs involved: The heart, veins, arteries, and gills.
Extra Information
- Perches can live up to 13 years.
- The largest perch ever found weighed 4.5 pounds.
- Rarely found in depths deeper than 30 feet.
