WIZARD WEEKLY
Week of September 19-23
WORD FROM THE EMERALD CITY
~ I hope you all had a restful weekend! I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some cooler temps!! This week looks like it's going to be a hot one, but maybe fall weather is on the horizon.
~ Thanks to everyone who has donated to Education Foundation! We are doing great, and we are working to have 100% participation! Remember, even $1 counts! If we get 100% participation, we are eligible for all sorts for fun rewards, including a catered lunch!! Turn in the cards to Gina or Robin, if you're wanting to make a donation.
~ Sunshine Dues are needed this week! Tomorrow is PAY DAY, so that's a perfect time to turn in the dues as well as get your much earned CANDY in the office tomorrow!!
~ When you post work in the halls, please remember to put the Learning Target posted above the work. That is something I did not reiterate in our staff welcome back week, but it's something we started last year that makes a big difference. When parents, staff AND students look at work posted in the hall, it should show what the students are working on in class. Having that learning target posted is a great visual that helps to enforce the work you are doing in class and shows the product of the instruction.
~ RtI meetings for grade levels are next week. You will each be receiving a copy of the RtI handbook, so you will have all the forms both in hard copy as well as in online format. We will discuss the forms, the procedures, and the plans for CARE team meetings in the future. After we meet, you will hopefully have a clear understanding of your role and the purpose of RtI. You all are already doing what needs to be done, it's just the documentation and consistency piece that needs to be fully implemented with fidelity.
~ We will have cake in the lounge on Wednesday for Emily and Carlos. We are not saying "goodbye;" we are saying "see you later!" Please plan to stop by the lounge during the day to have some cake, and make sure to snag them sometime in the next few days to wish them well. They will be missed tremendously, but we know they will be benefiting kids wherever they go!
~ For our 1/2 day PD next Friday, I would like to have vertical team meetings. With the small number of grade level sections, vertical planning is that much more crucial. I would like to have Math, ELAR, and Science. Please let me know who from your team will represent your grade level in the meetings. I will get the specific information to you as we get closer.
Campus News
~ Tomorrow night is Curriculum Night! Please let me know if your grade level needs anything. I have sent a Remind 101 reminder as well as posted it on Facebook. Please remind your families as well.
~ Angela Kennedy is on campus this Wednesday from 1:00- dismissal. She will be walking into the classrooms to look at evidence, writing folders, anchor charts, etc. to make sure we are in line and on track with the district pacing guide.
~ Wednesday is Sonic Night. Just like last year, if you go to sonic and text me the receipt or put in my box, you can wear jeans on Thursday!
~ Please send me the club you wish to teach this year. I need that list by this Friday, September 23rd. Please send me a short write up about the club, so I can include that in the spreadsheet that will be sent home for parents and students.
~Next Friday, September 30th is 1/2 day. I have sent the early dismissal schedule, so you should already have a copy of that. For lunch, it will be sack lunches, and Joy needs the counts by THIS Friday. Please check with your students and turn in lunch counts for sack lunches by THIS Friday, so that she knows how many hot dogs to order.
~ Just a reminder, on Wednesday, September 28th, there will be a small group of AP's on campus, doing learning walks around our campus. They will be going into classrooms, looking for evidence and instruction aligned to our district focus and focusing on our initiatives. They will be looking for evidence shown on the Rigor, Relevance, and Learner Engagement rubrics, They will also be looking for evidence of the Fundamental Five implementation. These are things you do all the time, but just to review the F. Five are: (framing the lesson i.e. learning targets/openings & closing, purposeful talk, working in the power zone, critical writing, recognition/reinforcement). Since we are small, it could be a possibility that all classrooms are visited. Please do not wear warm ups this week, since we will have visitors. You are welcome to use this as a "pass" and wear them on Thursday, if you like. Bobby will be in the group of AP's, and I think it will be about 4-6 people total.
Be Vocabulous!
We are in week 2 for our first round of words. Remember, this is the week that students make posters, videos, etc. to help teach other grade levels.
Here is the copy of the s'more newsletter about the vocabulary program. It has all the words listed for the year, so you can plan ahead! It has each word listed and the grade level responsible. The kids really enjoyed this last year, and I think this was something I had more comments from parents about than anything! They would comment about their students knowing the meanings of words that they didn't even know. The vocabulary parade was a big hit too. Even the older kids got into it and had fun being creative and participating.
Please turn in the "Word Up" Levels sheets when you have students who display the appropriate use of the words. Obviously, the younger they are, the more "adaptation" needs to occur in order to receive the levels, but the students who received the tags last year, LOVED it!! I will put the "Word Up Level" sheet on canvas!
As a reminder, the way the "Word Up Levels" work, goes like this...
All students will start as rookies and all students will have a chance to move up as many levels as they would like. Spirit Tags (that PTA is selling) will be used for levels 2 thru 5 and when a student reaches level 2 thru 5 they will receive a spirit tag for that level from the principal.
Teachers will nominate students to move up through the levels.
