REVIEW OF ALABAMA COURSE OF STUDY DIGITAL LITERACY AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
Call for public comment ends December 1st:
Alabama School Library Handbook Review - Professional Comments Open
With the release of a new set of National AASL Standards (THIS WEEK!), :), it is time for us to accomplish two things:
1. Vet the National Standards and adopt or customize them for Alabama
2. Review and present an updated handbook in draft form for approval prior to the end
of this school year
As soon as the standards are available as a file for sharing, I will post them in draft form for comment as we do all other Course of Study drafts. However, today we need to start review of the handbook. My goal is to have a revised handbook in draft form by the April Alabama State Department of Education Board work session. A revision (as large as needed) of the current handbook will be much easier than creating an entire new document. As an Alabama School Librarian, you have the right and responsibility to contribute revisions to the document that serves as our legal guidelines. Please provide links to timely research based articles (not opinion pieces) that support revisions/additions when available. (Please do not let the lack of research prevent you from identifying issues and making suggestions.) Be as detailed as possible when describing a problem. For instance, don't say "Scheduling" is a problem-- detail the problem OR offer suggested wording to be included in the handbook. Enter an individual form for each element that you address.
Everyone will have the opportunity to comment from now until December 15th. A smaller group consisting of willing previous handbook committee members, an ASLA member from each region and additional volunteers if needed will meet in January to review the comments and begin work on a draft handbook for presentation.
