In the 2000 census, there were 34,980 people, 13,320 households and 8,431 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 63.12% White, 27.66% African American, 1.42% Asian, 0.39% Native American, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 5.61% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.35% of the population.The median household income was $30,930, and the median family income was $37,775.

Berry College

Berry College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in Mount Berry, Floyd County, Rome, GA. It was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry and boasts 27,000 acres. With the world's largest campus, Berry offers a wide range of academic and work opportunities through its farm, forestry and environmental operations.

Large Flowered Skullcap

The Large Flowered Skullcap is an endangered species that is found in the Marshall Forest, located in Floyd county, Georgia. The plant has a single, erect square stem that may grow 30 to 60 cm in height.The leaves are simple, opposite in arrangement and the blades are 5 to 8 cm long and 3 to 5 cm wide. The species is threatened by human activity such as logging, suburban development, and quarrying.

Battle of Chickamauga

The Battle of Chickamauga was fought in Chickamauga, GA, in the historic high country. The battle resulted in a Confederate Victory. It involved the second highest number of casualties in the war following the Battle of Gettysburg. It was also the first major battle of the war that was fought in Georgia.
