BSD Family Update
For all elementary school families ( 8/17/2020)
Important Update
Greetings, BSD Families,
We want you to know that we HEARD you. Based on feedback from families, we have developed a second virtual/online option for K-5 families.
Why are we asking you to choose a learning pathway now?
We realize it is difficult to make a decision NOW for the rest of the year. This information is critical to our planning as it affects our staffing plans and classroom assignments. We want to minimize changes for our students later in the year and avoid students having to change teachers later in the year if at all possible.
We understand that things may change - and there are many unknowns. We will work with families to make sure all students are getting the support they need. We prefer that families make a commitment for their child’s learning pathway now for the year because we will be basing our staffing decisions and classroom assignments on the choices families make. A change of your child’s learning pathway later in the year will be dependent on space available at that time and as such the ability to switch learning models cannot be guaranteed and/or your student’s classroom teacher may change.
Option #1: Hybrid Learning (default)
If you would like your student(s) to return to school for face-to-face learning once it is available, please choose our Hybrid Learning pathway.
Students enrolled in Option #1 will begin school with a Connected Learning model this fall and move to a Hybrid model when we can reopen schools safely and offer some face-to-face learning.
The Connected Learning elementary schedule for fall will be shared with families later this week. This schedule begins Wednesday, September 2 for all elementary students enrolled in the Hybrid Learning Pathway.
If no pathway selection is made, the student will be enrolled in Hybrid Learning.
Students who choose the Hybrid Learning pathway may choose to stay in Connected Learning for the rest of the year when we reopen schools. However, the student’s classroom teacher will most likely change.
Virtual/Online options (2 pathways)
Some of our families know now that they do not want to have their children return to school for face-to-face learning this school year, but home schooling is not a good fit either.
We understand that our younger students need more support. We also understand that families have different needs. Some students need flexibility. Others need a more consistent, teacher-directed schedule with daily teacher and peer interaction. For that reason, we have developed TWO virtual options for our elementary (K-5) families. Click here for more details.
Option #2: Connected Learning (virtual)
Students will begin and complete this school year in Connected Learning, even if we reopen schools and offer some face-to-face learning.
Students will have consistent daily interaction with their peers and teacher.
Students will have a predictable schedule and structure - very similar to the Hybrid Connected Learning structure/schedule this fall. The exact schedule depends on the number of students who choose this option and the grades they are in.
Option #3: Flexible Learning (virtual)
This is the option for families who need flexibility for how and where their child completes his/her learning.
Students will begin and complete this school year in the Flexible Learning model even if we reopen schools and offer some face-to-face learning.
This option offers flexibility for families: Learning is done asynchronously with support from the teacher at a scheduled time that is convenient for the family.
Student has access to a teacher* for support, tutoring and connection.
*Note - Teachers for Flexible Learning will be a certificated Bremerton School District teacher, but may not be a teacher from your child’s school.
Option #4: Home Link (parent partnership / home school)
Please log-in to Skyward and choose your student’s learning pathway by midnight this Wednesday, August 19
Students who do not choose a pathway will be enrolled in hybrid learning.
If you have already completed the online form and selected the virtual pathway, you are welcome to log-in again and choose which virtual pathway (Connected Learning or Flexible) you'd like for your student. If not, we will contact you to confirm.
