D. is the lead author of the professional development and is a nationally recognized authority on literacy education. More than any other professional development curriculum, LETRS prepares educators for the challenging work of teaching literacy. The first three modules of LETRS professional development are: The Challenge of Learning to Read, The Speech Sounds of English: Phonetics, Phonology, and Phoneme Awareness, and Spellography for Teachers: How English Spelling Works. This course will focus on foundational reading skills and analyzing student work to determine why students may struggle with reading. Teachers will learn about why reading difficulties may occur, discuss instructional materials, practice new instructional routines, and analyze student work samples to determine next steps. Participants will move from theory to practice and will be expected to implement learning in their own classroom.

Participants will become fluent in the terminology and application of these terms to real-world examples. Participants will increase their skills as an objective observer and learn to think critically about why behavior occurs. Participants will learn about the dimensions of behavior, how to fine tune data collection systems, identify antecedent “triggers” of behavior and analyze maintaining consequences. Development and refinement of these skills will lead to more effective behavior interventions for students.

The US Department of Education, with its landmark study "Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning" (2008), found blended learning to be more effective than either face-to-face or fully online learning, concurring with many other studies performed at the higher education level. Blended learning offers much potential to bring the best of technology infused practices and flexibility found in the online format with the direct personal contact of a face-to-face classroom.
The downside is that many teachers are not prepared to implement blended learning in their classroom. This course focuses specifically on how blended learning works in an elementary setting, and how to overcome the challenges that teachers encounter with traditional learning-station use.

There have been many changes to the program to assist in its classroom implementation.
