## Family Fun and Fitness Night - January 21 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Come and enjoy a free fun-filled night at Fair Park Elementary! Bring the whole family and be ready to participate in fitness stations set up throughout the entire school! Afterwards, we will meet in the gym for a quick snack and a few raffle prizes.

To insure the safety of the children, all children must be accompanied by an adult attending this event. Please wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes for your safety and movement during activities. Also if you have a water bottle feel free to bring it!

## Silverbrook Course Selection - Monday, February 1

On Monday, February 1st, from 9:30-11, all of our current 4th graders will travel to the HS and experience concerts from their HS counterparts in band, choir, and orchestra. In addition, they’ll see video presentations from our Spanish, French, and German programs. All of this is preparation for their first “course selection” experience at Silverbrook.

## ELA (English-Language Arts)

Students are beginning the next reading unit. The comprehension strategy that we are working on is being able to summarize information. We are also focusing on using fix-up monitoring strategies to understand parts of a text they find confusing. All reading strategies are to get our kiddos to better understand the text that they are reading. We continue to work on the autobiography piece. Finally, if your child wants a break from reading a book, www.newsela.com is a great website to read current events.

## Eureka Math (Mr. Sternig & Mrs. Riffel)

Multiplication of up to Four Digits by Single-Digit Numbers

Building on their work in Topic B, students begin in Topic C decomposing numbers into base ten units in order to find products of single-digit by multi-digit numbers. Students practice multiplying by using models before being introduced to the standard algorithm. Throughout the topic, students practice multiplication in the context of word problems, including multiplicative comparison problems. In Lessons 7 and 8 , students use place value disks to represent the multiplication of two-, three-, and four-digit numbers by a one-digit whole number. Lessons 9 and 10 move students to the abstract level as they multiply three- and four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.

Finally, in Lesson 11 , partial products, the standard algorithm, and the area model are compared and connected via the distributive property (4.NBT.5).

## Bridges Math (Mrs. Anderson)

In this module (Unit 3, Module 2) the geoboard is assigned a value of 1. Students name fractional parts of the geoboard and describe the parts' relationships to one another. Their observations are then extended into comparing fractions with unlike numerators and denominators, and adding fractions with like denominators. The last three sessions in the module feature an extended problem-solving opportunity. Students will learn two new Work Places that provide practice with composing and decomposing fractions.

Please continue to practice multiplication facts with your child at home. Knowing the facts accurately is critical to solving math equations efficiently. Flashcards, apps, and websites are all great ways to practice.

## Science

In the Magnetism and Electricity Module, the focus will consist of five sequential investigations, each designed to introduce or reinforce concepts in physical science. The investigations provide opportunities for students to explore the natural and human-made worlds by observing and manipulating materials in focused settings using simple tools.

Enduring Understandings

The student will understand the properties of magnets and the effects they have on various objects.

The student will understand that electricity flows only if a circuit is complete.

The student will understand that electromagnetism is the combination of electricity and magnets.
