Radio Waves

Radio waves are one of the most commonly used waves and are used in everyday life.

These waves have the lowest frequency of those on the spectrum

These waves are safe

Used with cordless phones, Televisions, Radio Broadcasts

Microwaves

Microwaves are the second lowest on the spectrum. Telescopes can pick microwaves up in space

They have a low Frequency

They are safe

Used with cellphones, microwaves and satellite communication

Infrared

The amount of infrared waves an object has depends on it’s temperature.

They have a low frequency

They are safe

Used in special lamps and sometimes to even heat restaurants

Visible Light waves

Visible light waves are waves that we use all the time. They are what make it possible for us to see colors and the things around us.

They are safe

They have a low frequency

Used by the eyes of animals to see objects and colors

Ultraviolet Light Waves

Ultraviolet light waves carry enough energy where they can damage your skin. This is what causes sunburns.

These waves are dangerous

They have a high frequency

Can be used in DNA sampling. UV rays can also kill harmful bacteria

Xray

X rays are produced by the sun and other stars. We have developed technologies to use these waves

They have a high frequency

They are dangerous

Used for medical imaging

Gamma Waves

Gamma waves are very similar to xrays and are produced by stars. These waves are the highest and most dangerous on the EM spectrum

They have a high frequency

They are dangerous

Gamma rays can be used to kill cancer cells
