South Carolina Elementary Honor Choir
Congratulations Makenzie, Zoe, Katie, and Kylie!
Fifth graders Makenzie Duckson, Zoe Hinson, Katie Westbrook, and Kylie Wilson joined 278 other South Carolina students to perform in the South Carolina Elementary Honor Choir this past Saturday during the South Carolina Music Educators Conference at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Being accepted into this high performing group is a great honor. These students represented both Midway and Lexington School District One well in both preparation and performance.
The music selected for the concert included pieces sung in a second language, complex rhythms, and harmonies. The concert weekend included a 3 hour Thursday night rehearsal, 6 hours of rehearsal Friday, and a 30 minute Saturday rehearsal just prior the concert.
Congratulations Makenzie, Zoe, Katie, and Kylie for a job well done!

Midway Elementary School Students and Teachers Rev Up
for NEA's Read Across America Day
Thursday, March 2, 2017
We need you to help us keep the reading going! Our goal is to have readers at Midway every 30 minutes!
Can you sign up for a 30-minute time slot to read to 2-3 classes? You can bring your own books or books will be available for you to read. Talk to the students about the importance of reading at your job as ____________ and for pleasure.
Weather permitting, we will read outside in the bus loop but if necessary, inside at the wi-fi café.
It’s easy! Go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F48AFAD2CA5FE3-read and find a time that fits in your schedule.
Questions? Call me Dawn Merck at (803) 261-3567 or send me an email dmerck@lexington1.net. We appreciate your willingness to help and participate in our students’ education.
Thank you!
Dawn Merck
Read Across America Day: How it began...
It began in 1998 with the idea from an NEA's task to have a pep rally for reading. So the idea of Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday and the joys of reading, was born. Today we expect more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.
For more information NEA's Read Across America, visit www.nea.org/readacross and www.readacrossamerica.org and learn of other reading celebrations that are happening from coast to coast.
