Roadrunner Report
March
From the Principal's Pen
March 2023,
Hello Rolling Ridge families! We are excited to welcome a new month and more opportunities for our students to be involved at Rolling Ridge. This month we will hold our Family Math Game Night. Students and their families are invited to participate by staying after school on March 15th to make and play math games together. These games are a great family activity and a wonderful opportunity for our students to practice math skills at home. Also this month, our PTA will be offering an after-school board game club. We look forward to continuing to hold programs like these to benefit our roadrunners.
The Park View High School Cluster will be holding a Fine Arts Night at Park View High School. We look forward to celebrating the artistic talents of our roadrunners at Park View High School. Please see the music section of the newsletter for more information!
The end of the third quarter of school is on March 24th. There are student holidays on March 13th and 27th. Please be mindful of these dates when planning for the month.
Have a wonderful month!
Ms. Sacco

Library Notes
Happy February, Roadrunners!
This month is an exciting month in library! I’m excited to share that on February 8th, students in grades K-2 will have the opportunity to meet virtually with an author during their library time! Author Beth Ferry will be meeting with us to discuss her books- specifically, “Marsha is Magnetic”, her newest book which is nominated for a Virginia Readers’ Choice Award! We look forward to meeting her and learning from her!
On March 6th, students in 2nd and 3rd grade will have the opportunity during library time to meet local author Sue Fliess. Attached to this newsletter is a flyer in case anyone would like to order autographed copies of her books- though keep in mind that only students in second and third grade will have the opportunity to hear her speak. You are under no obligation to purchase a book from the author.
We hope to have another author visit for our upper grade students in the spring. Stay tuned!
Don’t forget, we will have our Spring Scholastic Book Fair on March 13-17. If you’d like to volunteer, please email me at lori.redman@lcps.org and I can send you the link for our sign-ups. All volunteers receive 15% off their Book Fair purchases!
And just a reminder as always: Read, Read, Read!!
News from the Gym
In the month of March during PE, students will be participating in a volleying unit (where students will be using their hands/paddle to strike a ball or balloon), students will also be participating in tumbling/gymnastics and jump rope combined unit during the month. The volleying unit will improve students’ hand eye coordination and the tumbling/gymnastics unit will allow students to improve their flexibility, the jump rope unit will improve students jumping and hand eye coordination. Be sure to check out the physical education section on Rolling Ridge’s website, as it will be updated each month with a new fitness calendar, which will provide students with activities they can do at home to stay active.

Music Notes
We are excited to celebrate Music in our Schools month during March at Rolling Ridge! Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade will continue to work on singing and music theory in addition to playing a variety of classroom percussion instruments. Students in 3rd grade will be singing and playing baritone ukuleles in class, and students in 4th and 5th grades will continue learning how to play the recorder. We are looking forward to lots of music making in the music room!
Parents of 3rdgrade students: Students in 3rd grade are preparing 'informances' for parents. An informance is a musical performance with educational elements. The informances will take place on a date TBD in March during your child's regularly scheduled music class. During the informance, students will highlight concepts learned during music class, and teach the parents. Students are very excited to show off what they've learned! Please be on the lookout for more information.
Parents of 4th and 5th grade students: Students are learning to play the recorder in music class. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn a woodwind instrument! We are encouraging students to practice at home because it is difficult to learn to play an instrument when it's only being played once a week. We are also giving students tips for 'quiet practice' in case the sound of recorder playing does not fit into your household.
On Wednesday, March 29 at 6:30 p.m., some of our 4th and 5th grade students will be singing in the Park View Fine Arts Cluster Concert. Musical groups from all schools in the Park View Cluster will be performing. The event is free and open to the public. Please come out to support the Fine Arts in Sterling Park!
