Mary's Mount Primary School
Term 3, Week 3 - 6 August 2021
KINDNESS PRAYER
Dear Jesus,
Teach us to be like You in all our ways.
Teach us kindness, gentleness, generosity, and to be
giving, forgiving, loving and caring.
Teach us to follow in Your humble footsteps.
Guide us to the place You want us to be, take control.
Mould and shape us into the brilliant beings we were
always defined to be.
Amen
PRINCIPAL'S NEWS
Dear Parents and Carers,
To laugh often and much,
to appreciate beauty,
to find the best in others,
to leave the world a bit better...
to know even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived:
that is to have succeeded.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
What does it mean to you to be just a little kinder in your daily life? To me, it means greeting those I meet with a smile. Seeking to be kinder than necessary is so important because everyone we meet is fighting some kind of battle. A random act of kindness could help a person work through a hardship they are carrying. Through our kind actions we are modelling to those around us how to treat others with respect. To be kind is to demonstrate respect.
How can we as adults and leaders of our community share kindness with each other? How can the children in our care learn from us and aspire to be kind in all they do?
CYBER SAFETY TALK
For those who came to the cyber safety talk last night (Thursday evening) I wish to thank you. The message you received from our guest speaker will empower you and your family to navigate the digital world more informed and with confidence in this space. A key message for me was to try not to ban gaming or social media, but to keep the lines of communication open, and to educate and monitor usage.
A handy tip is to mirror your child's screen time by mirroring their device to the smart TV so that their activity is highly visible.
I was hoping to see more of you there last night as this is such an important topic. The school has invested in becoming a member of ySafe for the safety of our community and to support our children to be safe online. It is important that the home and school message and language works in harmony. Your engagement in the resources we provide you will ensure the success of this initiative.
We are pleased to announce that our school has partnered with Australia’s leading cyber safety experts, ySafe, to provide you with support in managing your children’s safety and time online.
As a part of our partnership with ySafe, we have received our very own Parent Cyber Safety Hub. This Hub is a rich source of live information directly from ySafe’s multidisciplinary team of cyber safety experts. You can access our Cyber Safety Hub using the link below:
https://marysmount.cybersafetyhub.com.au
About the Parent Cyber Safety Hub
The Hub includes expert advice on the most pertinent cyber safety issues and frequently asked questions around platforms like TikTok, Fortnite, Instagram, and more. There are app reviews with age and safety recommendations, along with a range of guides and resources to help ensure healthy boundaries around screen-time & gaming, and step-by-step instructions for using parental controls and filtering out inappropriate content.
FREE Device Monitoring Tool for Parents
Mary's Mount Primary School has partnered with the parental control experts, Family Zone, to provide our parents with added cyber safety support in the form of Family Zone Insights. Family Zone Insights is a monitoring app that sends parents an alert if their child accesses risky or inappropriate content online. For more information about Family Zone Insights, and for instructions on how you can set up an Insights account, visit the Family Zone Insights page of our Cyber Safety Hub (under Cyber Safety Tech)
We are extremely excited to be able to offer you this level of expertise and support in an area that we know has been very challenging for many parents to manage. If you have any questions regarding the Hub, please contact Gabrielle Hoffmann or Sinead Muscat, our Digital Technology Co-ordinators.
HOMEWORK CLUB - Tuesday 10 August
Homework Club will be held in Year 2 as the Book Fair is set up in the library.
STAFF NEWS
Mrs Jo DeBarro recently tendered her resignation. I have had the opportunity to communicate with Jo over the past few months and she has expressed her great love of Mary's Mount Primary School. I extended the invitation to Jo to write a piece for the newsletter. Please see below.
It is with great sadness that I recently tendered my resignation from Mary’s Mount Primary School after fifteen years. Unfortunately, my throat problems have escalated to the point where my voice is now a whisper, which means returning to the classroom is no longer an option. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching at Mary’s Mount and working with such dedicated people for whom the welfare of the children in their care is first and foremost. The parent body at our school are supportive of the staff and welcoming to new families in a way that makes us a true community. Lastly, the children at our school are amazing. They give their all, whether it is in the classroom, on the sporting field or in the playground. They are caring and compassionate and try every day to “raise the bar.” I will miss you all and wish God’s blessings on each and every one of you.
Mrs DeBarro will be invited to join us towards the end of 2021 for an assembly so that the children can farewell her.
WELCOME BACK MR SMITH
Next week we welcome back Mr Smith to school! We have all missed having you around Mr Smith.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.
God Bless

THE MMPS CODE OF CONDUCT
A reminder that every member of the Mary's Mount Primary School community must behave in the manner described in our Code of Conduct.
Our Code is like the 40km/h speed limit outside our school in the mornings and afternoons. It defines behaviours that keep our students safe: at school, and elsewhere. Children and young people surrounded by adult and peer behaviours described in the Code are more likely to recognise and choose healthy relationships for themselves.
We each keep our students safe by following our Code of Conduct, and encouraging and reminding each other to do so.
For Staff, our Code of Conduct is a lawful direction and forms part of your employment agreement.
For parents, compliance is a condition of your entry to school premises.
You can easily find our school's Code of Conduct on our school's website under compliance via the link below, or collect a hard copy from the sign in desk in the front office.

THE NYOONGAR SEASON OF DJILBA
We have entered the Nyoongar Season of Djilba.
Djilba runs through August and September. It is a transitional time of the year, with some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy and windy days mixing with the occasional sunny day or two.
Djilba is the start of the massive flowering explosion that happens in the south-west of the state which starts with yellow flowering plants such as acacias. Other colours that are around at this time of year are creams, combined with some vivid and striking blues.
COMMUNITY NEWS
KALAMUNDA WATER PARK - OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT
I am writing to you in relation to the future of the Kalamunda Water Park - in particular the 50m outdoor pool and the water slides. The City of Kalamunda is currently undergoing a Business Plan to decide which of 4 options they will adopt to resolve the current situation with the facility. The situation at the moment is that there are two complexes proposed. An Aquatic Leisure Centre in Forrestfield/High Wycombe next to the new airport link train station is to be built within 5-20 years. The second consideration is the immediate upgrade and heating of the current Kalamunda 50m outdoor pool to include hot showers which will be open seven months of the year. This option will possibly include an indoor 25m heated pool and an outdoor half-court basketball area.
The Kalamunda City has provided the public with an opportunity to comment on these decisions and I am seeking your urgent support and also that of your school community. I would encourage you to complete an on-line survey before the 8th October to show the City that both complexes are important to people of all ages and we need to secure these facilities for the future of our children. The survey is on the City's website at www.engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au
Regards and thank you in advance for your support.
Andrea Williams, President, Maida Vale Masters Swimming Club.
