With the colder temperatures creeping in, we will likely see an increase in illnesses here at OPES. Please help us keep the school as healthy as possible this season. Here are some things that can help:
- Handwashing- proper handwashing is the number one way to decrease the spread of germs. Please work with your child to make sure that they are learning the correct way to clean their hands.
- Please keep your child home if they are sick. SC DHEC (York County Health Department) has developed a list of health conditions and illnesses that could require a student to miss school. They include, but are not limited to: fever greater than 100, rapidly spreading rash, draining sores that cannot be covered, severe vomiting, diarrhea, pink eye, flu-like symptoms, head lice and ringworm that can’t be covered. For a complete School Exclusion List, go to www.scdhec.gov.
- If your child has a fever, SC DHEC requires that they must be fever-free without medication for 24 hours before they can return to school.
If your child is sick and stays home from school, it is helpful to include on the school excuse why your child stayed home. For instance, if you child stayed home because of the flu, this would be helpful in tracking outbreaks and know when special cleaners may be needed in the classroom.
Thank you for helping us keep OPES as healthy as possible this winter! Nurse Amy
Holiday Angel Tree
Plenty of angels remain on our Virtual Angel Tree. If you are able, consider claiming an angel that directly supports OPES families. Click on our PTO home page where you find more information and a direct link to the Angel sign up. You bring your gifts to the PTO office as soon as you get them. Remember, do NOT wrap the gifts and label them clearly with the Angel letter/number. Deadline to drop off gifts is December 13th.
STEAM Resource Drive
We are collecting recycled, gently used, and new items for our upcoming STEAM/Literacy Night in January. Students earn an incentive for each day they bring in items. Click the link HERE for more information on requested items and incentives for each day during the week of December 4th-8th.
Aquariums Needed! Our 5th Grade teachers are planning an inquiry unit for their students. They are in need of 18 aquariums to use as part of this STEAM-based inquiry project. If you have a used aquarium you’d like to donate or are willing to purchase one for our school, we would greatly appreciate it! They are requesting 4 gallon - 12 gallon sized aquariums (no filter system needed) and they will be reused each year. Thank you to those parents that already donated! If you have questions, please contact Amanda Cauthen. firstname.lastname@example.org
