Friday Focus!
"Snow provokes responses that reach right back to childhood"
Alright Z, what is with the dang cart anyway!
As we all know, it is easy to become comfortable in our ways and get stuck in a "rut". Well, I decided I was in an office rut. I did not appreciate how much I had been in my office, but I kept telling myself I had work to do in there and continued to stay put.
About two weeks ago I was done. I sent a text of frustration to a friend in Nebraska. I lamented about how much time I was spending doing paperwork in my office. She shot back the best advice. She said "You have a laptop! Find a cart and work in the halls. Why haven't you thought of this before, I thought you were smart!"
Half of the issues we face can be averted by being visible and in the halls. The Portable Principal concept gets us (Eide has started too!) in the hall to help out, supervise, and see who is wandering the halls every block.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! I can't verify that I have actually helped avert any student issues like tardies, truancy, or lingering, but I know they aren't happening in the halls I am in! I have been able to pop right into several classes and solve issues on the spot. Technology problems, electrical issues, or participation in teaching CPR have been tackled from my mobile office. In fact, last week a teacher popped into the hall with their phone and said "I was just calling you, I need help!". Great, here I am!
So, short answer is, I wanted to do what I do better and this seems to be the natural step after my walkabouts in the building.

I am behind the times, but I wanted to share this book
From my perspective, it reminded me how luckily I am to work with the staff I do. My favorite part of the book is when the principal was explaining to Auggie how he already "knew about all those things" and he knew because "Middle School Principals know everything"! You know what, this is more true that a lot of people think. You all keep me informed about everything and I truly appreciate that. It makes my job easier.
