## Outclass Schedule

We had a great week learning about the external and internal character traits from some of our favorite book characters. Next week our focus will be on context clues. We will use these clues to find out the meaning of unknown words within a passage, story, or text.

Ex. of Context Clues

Julie bought a gift for her mom at a cart in the mall. The kiosk sells special chocolate candies.

In this sentence, the word kiosk means

• car
• office
• department
• cart

## Writing

This week we got started on a new writing prompt. We brainstormed a list of times we were sick or hurt. We will continue this prompt next week and focus on the use of adjectives to describe the nouns we have used. We use adjectives to make our sentences more descriptive.

We want to SHOW our readers what happened during our small moment. The students will continue to work with their writing buddy to generate sentences that show our readers what happened.

We will also spend some time editing and revising our work. Writing conferences will help the students see what they need to work on to improve their personal narratives.

## Math

We are moving right along in second grade math! This past week, we learned how we can use our doubles facts to solve NEAR doubles problems. Next week, we will move into adding 2 digits with 1 digit, 2 digits with 2 digits, and using 10's as another method to add and subtract. It will be a very busy week and we will use both "traditional" and "non-traditional" methods to solve our problems. Ultimately though, the method isn't the objective: rather, the ability to compute is our goal. If you are looking for additional means to practice, here are some websites to try:

As always, keep practicing on ReflexMath to master your facts!

## Science

This week we will begin a new unit of study on the physical properties of matter. The students will begin learning the differences between solids, liquids and gases, including physical characteristics of each. We will look at multiple examples of each type of matter and determine if it is a solid, liquid, or gas based on the physical characteristics we observe. This week will focus on building our back ground knowledge on matter. This will help us to gain even more have more meaningful learning opportunities as we move into many hands-on experiments and explorations involving matter in the coming weeks.

## Social Studies

In social studies we will begin our economics unit. We will learn about needs and wants. Have fun discussing needs and wants when you're out shopping!
