About the Hip Africa Building Campaign
While the local people have little money and cannot pay tuition, Livingstone and his team of teachers feed the students two meals per day by modest donations from well wishers. Electricity and water bills are paid by well wishers that make recurring donations so that he can focus on the other necessities such as food and school supplies. This has been a challenging but rewarding journey --more and more children want to come to HIP.
Livingstone recently had blueprints drawn up to build what would be regarded as a proper, modern school building. In the meantime though, he has been informed by a government inspector that the requirements for school buildings have evolved and that he must build three new school rooms, two washrooms, and a fence. In other words, the timing is unfortunate. This did not leave enough time to do a major campaign for the new school so he has no choice but to solve the short term problem of constructing the free standing classrooms that are required by the government in order for the students to be able to attend.

What is Student Empowerment?
This is a student empowerment project because...
-Your students can identify the best use of technology for this project.
-Your students can figure out what the best marketing strategies are.
-Your students can choose the best ways to track their progress.
-Your students can decide how they wish to communicate with HIP Africa.
If you take a close look at this list, it is easy to see how the project will provide authentic tasks to reinforce: collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking, empathy building, number sense, graphing/charting, writing, technology integration, (understanding different cultures, geography, and more.
Since choice and voice are key, the fundraising ideas presented below are only a starting point. Some of the best ideas may yet to be discovered by your students!
IDEA #1 Pajama Day for Students
IDEA #2 Staff Jeans Day
Idea #3 Students can Make Something and Sell it
IDEA #4 Have a Performance and donate the proceeds
IDEA #5 Collect Coins as a school
Your students would decide how long they thought the coin collection should go on. Generally around 2-3 weeks is done and announcements are made every day in the morning. Many students like to hold class competitions with a donated prize being awarded to the class with the most participation.
Since not all students would have a lot of extra coins to bring in, a participation award (# of students that brought in something) is recommended by students but other students like the idea of an award also going to the class who raises the most $. Prizes can be parent visits to rooms to teach a lesson and do not necessarily have to involve tangible goods.
